The United States has sent its nuclear-powered Nimitz aircraft carrier to the Red Sea to support a possible attack on Syria, Defense Dept. officials said.

The presence of the ship and other destroyers and a cruiser are meant to be a show of force at this time. “We try to reduce the physics of time and space so we can be as ready as possible should we be needed,” an official told Reuters.

The destroyers are carrying 200 Tomahawk missiles, far more than the number that analysts estimate would be used on an attack on the Syrian regime’s military.
