The IDF Spokesperson’s Office said that on Saturday evening the latest terrorist tunnel of the Hamas terrorist organization in the Erez crossing was neutralized and the route of the tunnel was neutralized by attacking fighter jets.

“This is a tunnel that was discovered in the security stage, only a few meters from Israeli territory,” the IDF said. “The tunnel was intended to reach Israeli territory near an Israeli settlement and the Erez crossing, which serves as a humanitarian crossing.”

The identification and neutralization of the tunnel is part of the ongoing effort to thwart the underground terror of the terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip, headed by Hamas — an operational, intelligence and technological effort that has been intensified over the past year.

The IDF added that its advanced detection technologies continue to improve, along with the continued construction of the underground barrier.

“Hamas continues to invest enormous resources in building terrorist tunnels and sabotaging the humanitarian efforts of the State of Israel and other countries to help the residents of the Gaza Strip, instead of investing in developing the Strip and providing welfare to its residents,” the statement went on.

Hamas has been working for weeks to turn the fence and security space into a space of terror and fighting, the IDF Spokesperson pointed out, with violence at the border continuing to be used as cover for terrorist attempts above and below the ground, and the tunnel that was neutralized providing further proof of these efforts. “The IDF will not allow such a situation to materialize and will continue to act in a systematic and precise manner to prevent it,” the IDF said.

The IDF warned Gazans against reaching the area of the fence during events Hamas has planned for May 14-15 2018, saying it will not allow harm to the security and sovereignty of Israel’s citizens and will continue to act resolutely against terror above and below the ground.
