For the first time, the United States has extradited to Israel a suspect wanted for tax-related offenses.

Israel’s State Prosecutor’s office requested that Aharoon Barashi be extradited from the US to Israel after evading NIS 17.5 million in income and Value Added Tax between 1997 and 2011, according to a report in Globes online business magazine.

Barashi fled from Israel in 2003 after being indicted by the Jerusalem District prosecutor in the wake of an investigation by the Israel Tax Authority.  Barashi was arrested in Miami in November 2012 because of Israel’s extradition request.

At his extradition hearing, Barashi waived procedures by volunteering for the extradition.  He entered into a plea bargain and will be sentenced by the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court.
