The United States has roundly condemned a terrorist attack Wednesday on iconic British institutions in central London that left three people dead, including a London police officer, in addition to the killer.

“President Donald J. Trump spoke today with Prime Minister Theresa May of the United Kingdom to offer his condolences on today’s terror attack in London and his praise for the effective response of security forces and first responders,” read a statement from the White House.

“He pledged the full cooperation and support of the United States Government in responding to the attack and bringing those responsible to justice.”

The attack was carried out on the anniversary of the horrific 2016 Islamic State terrorist attack on the Brussels metro and Zaventem airport.

A meeting was also taking place at the time in Washington DC, convening the 68 members of the U.S.-led coalition fighting against the terrorist organization in Syria and Iraq.

Authorities believe the attack “may have been inspired” by Islamic State extremists.

U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Prime Minister May by phone following the attack to offer his condolences on the attack.

Likewise, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson issued a statement on the attack.

“On behalf of the United States, I express my condolences to the victims and their families. The American people send their thoughts and prayers to the people of the United Kingdom. We condemn these horrific acts of violence, and whether they were carried out by troubled individuals or by terrorists, the victims know no difference,” the statement said.

State Department acting spokesperson Mark Toner added the department was closely monitoring the situation.

“Our hearts go out to those affected. We stand ready to assist in any way the UK authorities would find helpful. The safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas is one of our highest priorities.”

Toner also said the embassy in London is monitoring the situation. “We stand ready to provide all possible consular assistance should we become aware of any affected U.S. citizens. We urge U.S. citizens in London to contact family members and loved ones to notify them that you are safe, to avoid the area and monitor local news.”

New York City officials also said the NY Police Department has upgraded security around the city at select locations as well.

High-value British targets have been provided with “long-gun” protection, as have locations such as Grand Central Station, New York City Hall and other iconic landmarks in the city.
