Three leaders: President Obama, Secretary Clinton and Canadian Prime Minister Harper by the end of last week expressed both in words and deeds a commitment to the elimination of Iran's nuclear program. Interestingly, the one whose action Friday will probably have the most profound influence on the future of Iran was Hillary Clinton, who has unleashed an old, aggressive enemy against the Mullahs' state. It may only be a matter of time before other Western powers will internalize Bibi's message.

Describing what he said were "racist" attacks by settlers on Palestinians in collusion with the Israeli government, Abbas told the General Assembly on Thursday that he has reached the conclusion "that the Israeli government rejects the two-state solution." He said, however, that Palestinians remain ready to negotiate a two-state solution. "We do not seek to delegitimize an existing state, that is, Israel," Abbas said.

Israel’s problem with the Palestinians is that it has not established a clear strategy, or any strategy at all for that matter, regarding its most intimate neighbors, "and that is why we are not leading any course of action except merely responding," argued on Thursday Israel Beitenu leader and Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman.

The Palestinian Authority will likely bid in September to become a UN “non-member observer state.” A document prepared by the PLO’s negotiations support unit, says both Israel and the U.S. have an arsenal of punitive measures at their disposal. It says the U.S. could close the PLO mission in Washington, suspend aid to the Palestinians or withhold contributions to any UN agency the Palestinians try to join. The Arab League last month gave Abbas its backing for a new General Assembly bid, but did not specifically recommend its timing.

After a bus carrying Israeli tourists at Bulgaria's Burgas airport exploded on Wednesday, killing seven and wounding at least 30 more, a U.N. spokesperson said that Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon condemned the attack "in the strongest possible terms." But in reality, the U.N. chief was a lot more restrained than when, for instance, churches were bombed in Kenya two weeks ago. Words matter in diplomacy, and Ban Ki-Moon appeared to reserve his stronger words to violations of the human rights of non-Israelis.
