Israel Rabbi Says Marijuana ‘Kosher’ if Medicinal

Marijuana is not milk or dairy; it is not an animal whose kashrus is questionable. Rabbis have ruled it’s not kosher to take drugs to escape the world, but one rules “grass” for medical purposes is kosher.

Legalizing marijuana in Israel would wipe out the black market and generate huge tax revenues, according to a a new study.

An Israeli Orthodox rabbi ruled that distributing and smoking medicinal marijuana is kosher, but using weed for fun is forbidden.

Ephraim Zalmanovich, the rabbi of Mazkeret Batia, a town south of Tel Aviv, made the distinction in a recent halachic ruling, NRG, the news site of the Maariv daily reported on Friday. Leading rabbis frequently weigh in on matters of reconciling halacha, or Jewish law, with modern living.

Rabbi Zalmanovich’s ruling modifies an opinion by Rabbi Chaggai Bar Giora, who in March told Israel’s Magazin Canabis, “If you smoke it, there is no problem whatsoever.”

Rabbi Zalmanovich, the author of a book on alcoholism in Judaism, said, “Taking drugs to escape this world in any excessive way is certainly forbidden.”

However, if the drug is administered to relieve pain, then the person giving it is “performing a mitzvah,” and the person using the drug is using it “in a kosher fashion.”

Approximately 11,000 Israelis use medicinal marijuana, including people with post-traumatic disorders and Parkinson’s disease, according to the Israeli health ministry.

  4. IN GENESIS WHEN GOD MADE ALL THINGS, INCLUDING THE PLANTS AND GRAINS AND HERBS, HE SAW IT AS "GOOD". IT WAS ONLY AFTER THE FALL OF MAN THAT THE NEGATIVES OF THOSE GOOD THINGS CAME INTO PLAY. IF ALCOHOL CAN BE USED FOR MANY AILMENTS, BUT MISUSED TO GET DRUNK AND INJURE PEOPLE CAN STILL BE LEGAL FOR PURCHASE, THEN WHY CAN'T CANABIS? LIKE THE RABBI SAYS THAT IF IT IS USED FOR WHAT IT IS INTENDED FOR AND NOT JUST TO GET HIGH, THEN IT IS A GOOD THING. MISUSE MOCKS THE GOODNESS THAT GOD MADE IN IT BECAUSE YOU ARE FALLING INTO THE NEGATIVE SIDE OF WHAT OCCURED AFTER MAN FELL INTO SIN BY FORTAKING IN A FRUIT THAT GOD FORBADE THEM TO BECAUSE IT WAS NOT A GOOD THING FOR THEM. HOPEFULLY THE LAWS WILL CHANGE SO PEOPLE THAT DO NOT MISUSE IT CAN BENEFIT AND ALL WILL BENEFIT BY GIVING A CROP FOR FARMERS TO MAKE A LIVING AND MANY PRODUCTS FROM THE NATURAL FIBERS FROM CLOTH AND ROPE, ETC., CAN BE USED TO HELP US IN LESS USED OF MAN MADE ITEMS THAT CAUSE HARM TO OUR EARTH. SHALOM!

Pharmaceutical Marijuana is available in precise calculate dosages in pill form.
Bottom line… People just like to get high and will find any way to justify doing so.
The negative consequences of smoking marijuana include; lower serotonin levels, higher risk of depression, bi polar disorder and schizophrenia, highly increased risk of cancer. Today's marijuana is 6 to 20 times more potent than a decade ago. All aspects of a persons life is a negatively affected with drug use.

  6. What about "lead wine" too?

  7. IT IS ABOUT TIME CANNABIS(MARIHUANA) IS A GREAT MEDICINE THAT SHOULD BE PRESCRIBED MORE OFTEN THAN PHARMACEUTICAL PILLS OR OTHERS.

  8. it had been used for 109 ailments and was kept in the doctors herbal medicine supplies. everything used to be pretty much herbal, from plants. Papa said he would used the green herbs and such from the lands for the Healing of the Nations. Ignorant unread folk can just stay ignorant. Latest study from major medical study from a renouned souce, like the Mayo Clenic or one of those renouned Medical Groups or Universitys. There is such an obvious link that Pot is Quite amazing when it comes to The Blood Sugar and how the body uses Insulin. The Results and Implications are Clear.. Got High Blood Pressure. Smoke a joint after getting your high reading and check it in about just 5-15 minutes.. Listen to the Medical Pharmaceuticals.. don't you know they are our Friends.. As long as you have insurance or a dime left in your pocket. And if you are on 4 medications this year then next year you will probably be worse and have other problems and they will Write you some more $$$, i mean Prescriptions. And it is great too for Depression and is what some Indian Tribes in America smoked in their Peace Pipes.. Seems another affect it has on people is to Mellow them out and even turn Haws into Doves.. Make Love not War.

  11. what "sin"? — if you are referring to "The Fall of Man" — N O T a Jewish idea (w/ no Hebrew parallel) then find me the word "heth" (sin) in the Gan Eden narrative. It ain't there bc whatever it was, eating that fruit was not a sin. Only Ka-in in 4:7 hears this word for the first time in torah but it's unrelated to that infamous eating. But sin it was not as the word is absent from the text. Christianity must have a "sin" here to explain baptism, but Judaism?
