Prime Minister Netanyahu is finding out that there is significant opposition to his plans to run the Likud on a joint list together with Yisrael Beiteinu in the upcoming elections.

Following a petition signed by 400 Likud central committee members, and as per Likud rules, the Likud will now be required to hold a secret ballot among all the central committee members to see if they approve of the joint list proposition.

In surveys taken of Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu members, the majority claimed to support running as a joint list.

But opponents of the joint list are hoping that in a secret ballot, the results will go against Netanyahu. One Central Committee Member told JewishPress.com that this merger “strips internal democracy from the Likud.”

The secret ballot may be held on Monday.

  1. Charlie Hall says:

I don't understand Israeli politics. A "Likud Central Committee" would have this kind of power? I thought the only party "Central Committee" that could overturn a head of government's political decision was the one for the Communist Party in the old Soviet Union!

  2. Ira Tick says:

No, it makes sense. He has to run as a representative of his party, or he has to run independently by forming a new party. Party rules can control party decisions, especially in a country whose election laws are not part of a constitution.

  3. Ira Tick says:

The Likud CentCom can't overturn governmental decisions or change law, but they can control how Bibi runs as a Likudnik.

  4. Charlie Hall says:

" can control how Bibi runs as a Likudnik."

If they are stupid enough to overturn Bibi, he can just quit Likud, join YB, and take most of the Likud MKs with him.

  5. Larry Lennhoff says:

Yes, but in that case he is unlikely to get the top slot in YB, which in turn makes it less likely he ends up as PM.

  6. Charlie you don't understand Israeli politics,or Israel. Likud will be better off without Bibi! Then it can become a true right wing party!

  7. Charlie Hall says:

You are right, I don't understand Israeli politics!

In Israel's history, what "true right wing party" has done better than Likud did last election?
