A vessel carrying a container filled with ammonia sprung a leak on Monday in the port of Haifa.

No injuries were reported. Firefighters were inspecting the site to assess the damage and determine the next step.

It is precisely this scenario and worse that deeply worried environmental and security officials in Haifa who decided earlier this year that it was necessary to close the giant ammonia storage tank located in the port.

The tank belongs to the Haifa Chemicals company, which was asked to make alternative arrangements for storing the ammonia in a more secure and less risky site.

The Haifa Court of Internal Affairs issued an order in February 2018 to empty the controversial ammonia tank that had been sitting for years in Haifa Bay.
