Egypt’s national elections are set for March 26-28, National Election Commission (NEC) head Lasheen Ibrahim announced Monday at a news conference in Cairo.
The results from the first round will be announced on April 2.
A run-off ballot will be held on April 24-26 if necessary, Ibrahim told journalists, with final results to be announced on May 1.
Those who wish to submit applications to become candidates for the presidency were told to submit applications to the commission between January 20 and 29.
“The provisional list of candidates and the numbers of their supporters will be published” in state-run newspapers Al-Ahram and Al-Akhbar on January 31,” Ibrahim said, according to Reuters.
After rejections and appeals are completed, “The final list of candidate names and their symbols will be announced and published in the official gazette and Al-Ahram and Al-Akhbar newspapers” on February 24, he added.
The commission will “spare no effort in running elections in accordance with the highest standards of fairness and international transparency,” Ibrahim told the journalists.
It is widely expected that incumbent President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi will run for a second term after having won a landslide victory in 2014.
This will be Egypt’s third election since the 2011 Arab Spring riots that overthrew the long rule of President Hosni Mubarak.
