UN soldiers patrol near the border with Syria in the Golan Heights after stray mortar shells landed in Israel in open fields Oct. 21, 2017

IDF soldiers attacked a Syrian military position Monday across the border after the northern Golan Heights was hit by a mortar shell during the morning hours.

The IDF targeted a Syrian regime forces artillery cannon located in the same position from which the shelling was fired at Israel.

The shelling was believed to have been “spillover” from the Syrian civil war taking place on the other side of the border.

“The IDF sees the Syrian regime as responsible for every action that takes place in its territory and will not tolerate violations of the sovereignty of the State of Israel and the security of its citizens,” the IDF said in a statement.
