Look at this haunting image of illegal African immigrants, mostly from Eritrea and the Sudan, protesting outside the Holot detention center, not far from Ktziot, in the Negev, southern Israel. They insist Israel grant them refugee status and let them settle peacefully in the land, invite their families in and share in our success.

We’ve noted here a few months ago that, technically speaking, they’re not entitled to political asylum in Israel, because the land they fled to from their war-torn home countries was Egypt, where the only danger they faced was hunger, not persecution.

Still, it’s heart breaking to watch these people begging for help. There are an estimated 60,000 of them. So let’s share the burden.

There are 740 million people living in Europe. There are roughly 8 million in Israel. So Israel will accept 500 asylum seekers, no questions asked. Europe will absorb the rest.

It’s a deal?
