Hundreds of thousands of Haredi Jews attended a protest in Jerusalem, against a proposed Knesset plan to impose the military service to their young people.
How about this deal: Haredim don’t have to serve, but each time an IDF soldier gives up his young life to defend them, they have to send this size crowd to his funeral. And they should make the same pleas to “Our father in Heaven” that they did yesterday, with tearful voices and breast beating – the whole gestalt.
I’ve never seen this much shirking of adult responsibility dressed up as love of Torah. My God, have they read the Torah, or do they go straight to the pashkvillim (public leaflets)?
I know the bill is bad, definitely worse than the one that it’s replacing—but this was not a protest, this was a show of political muscle. These are not victims of anything other than their own overdeveloped sense of entitlement.
It was absolutely appropriate to run this assembly on Rosh Chodesh Adar, a month when we’re commanded to drink until we no longer know the difference between Blessed be Mordechai and Cursed be Haman. These folks have already fulfilled the mitzvah.
