Socks Clinton (March 23, 1989 – February 20, 2009) was the pet cat of U.S. President Bill Clinton’s family during his presidency. An adopted stray cat, he was the only pet of the Clintons during the early years of the administration, and his likeness hosted the children’s version of the White House website. After Clinton left office, Socks moved in with former Clinton secretary Betty Currie and her husband, “owing to continuing conflicts” with the Clintons’ dog Buddy, a Labrador Retriever.
Betty Currie testified that President Clinton had called her in to work on a Sunday, on January 18, 1998, and pointedly said to her, regarding intern Monica Lewinsky and himself, “We were never alone, right?” and other leading questions. Currie’s testimony, added to similar incidents involving other potential witnesses, led to Clinton’s subsequent impeachment charge of obstruction of justice.
I won’t be surprised if Socks was placed in Currie’s home just to monitor her actions. Tuxedos are very smart. And I never believed the story about his not getting along with a Labrador Retriever. I mean, come on, the two most outgoing and friendly cat and dog species – how could they possibly not get along?
