Irish UNDOF trops looking at Syria from Israel's Mount Bental tourist site on the Golan Heights. (Archive: April 2015)

UNDOF (United Nations Disengagement Observer Force) troops from Ireland were on Mount Bental on the Israeli Golan Heights on Tuesday.

They were looking through the telescope into Syria and reviewing a map of the area, and doing what appeared to be a daily briefing or an introductory session for new soldiers.

Mount Bental is the site of old IDF bunkers and trenches overlooking Syria.

Now it’s a tourist site.

It’s about as close to Syria as these UN troops are going to get these days, with all that internecine fighting going on over there.

Afterwards the UN troops went for lunch in Katzrin.

It’s tough to be a UN peacekeeper.
