Reports of international outrage over the bombing of a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus were lacking on Monday, as over half the population of the camp fled for their lives.
In a report by the Ma’an News Agency, since the aerial bombing, which occurred near a mosque and killed at least 25 people, over half of Yarmouk’s approximately 150,000 residents have run away, seeking shelter in nearby schools, mosques, and UN buildings.
PLO official in Syria Anwar Abdul-Hadi told Ma’an that supposed Palestinians living in Yarmouk have suffered significantly, due to fighting between rebels and Palestinians aligned with Syrian dictator Bashar Assad.
The last two weeks have been filled with heavy fighting, with anti-Assad forces beginning to take the upper hand, hence the air attack by Assad’s forces.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who announced an emergency visit to Gaza during Operation Pillar of Defense in order to stop Israel’s push back against rocket attacks on the civilian populations of Israel’s south, issued a lukewarm statement on Sunday, calling the Syrian bombing “a matter of grave concern”.
Syrian officials also reported killing dozens of people in the northeast and southwest on Sunday.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday called the attack “a matter of grave concern,” while French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius called the attack “scandalous.”
