Drainage work in the Tel Aviv area uncovered a Russian-made tank captured by Israel in a previous war

A World War II-era Soviet tank was unearthed during the excavation of a site in Holon.

The rusting tank was found Monday buried underground in the large industrial area of the city, adjacent to Tel Aviv. Ironically, the excavation was taking place on Merkava Street. Merkava is the mane of Israel’s domestically produced tank.

It is believed that the T-34  tank, which was manufactured in 1939, was captured during one of Israel’s wars, probably the War for Independence in 1948. It is unknown if it was buried on purpose or if it was accidentally covered during drainage work.

Following the discovery of the tank, the area was closed off out of fear that explosives remained on or near the military vehicle. Israel Police posted photos of the tank on its Facebook page.
