Syrian rebel fighters have refused to accept a Syrian-born and naturalized American citizen as their show prime minister, destroying an American effort to put into place an organizational structure to help channeling aid to rebels in the war against Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Texas resident and IT executive Ghassan Hitto narrowly won last week’s election as “prime minister” amid warnings by rebels that they do not hold enough territory in Syria to warrant an interim government.

Hitto was backed not only by Western governments but also by organizations outside of Syria, such as the Muslim Brotherhood, making him even more suspicious to opponents.

Syrian National Coalition president Mouaz al-Khatib wrote on his Facebook page Sunday, “I am keeping my promise today and announcing my resignation from the National Coalition so that I can work with freedom that is not available inside the official institutions.”

He blamed Western powers for failing to give enough material support to the rebels while trying to punish them into dialogue with Assad, whose army and secret service have murdered tens of thousands of men, women and children in the two-year-old rebellion.

Secretary of State John Kerry steadfastly continued U.S. foreign policy of living in its own world and insisted that the resignation only proves that there is in Syria “an opposition that is bigger than one person and that opposition will continue.”

Kerry, in case anyone forgets, visited Damascus often when he was chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and struck up a dialogue with Assad, who in turn was termed a “reformer” by Kerry’s predecessor Hillary Clinton two weeks after the beginning of the revolt against him.

    al qaeda vs syria/iran.

The US should be sitting back and letting them destroy each other.

A lot of innocent people will die as a result of doing nothing. Mitt Romney wanted to arm the rebels even without this kind of agreement. This effort was worth trying even if the probability of success was low. Calling it a "colossal failure" as the headline does (which, admittedly, is not a description used in the article) is simply Obamahater propaganda. There may be no good guys with any power in Syria and every attempt to help the few that exist should be supported.

  3. Charlie Hall – too bad. Romney was wrong too.

Syria is going to have a huge genocide of either Sunnis or Awaites and Christians regardless of anything else. The Arabs will murder hundreds of thousands of innocent people – that is the Arab way.

Nothing the world does will change that fact. Getting in the middle of it just delays it and makes you the target. Arming either side will result in the side you armed in attacking you with those same weapons. This is the Middle East and that is the way it works

  4. Given how much you all seem to hate my president and my country, I assume you must feel great shame accepting billions of our dollars every year. How bout you stop taking it. Welfare queens.

Charlie Hall And we should support the al qaeda rebels why? Just this past sunday, they fired rockets into the heart of Damascus indiscriminately/. We still do not know who is using the WMDs. There are plenty of WMDs now in islamist hands thanks to obama and qadaffi.

And spare us your histrionics. Disagreeing with obama automatically becomes "obamahater propaganda?" I didn't realize FREE THOUGHT was "obamahate." Either exchange ideas realistically or admit you are naught more then an obama propaganda promoter attacking all who DARE disagree.

  6. Arie's Pragmatic Politics says:

No shock that a so-called progressive self-hating Jew goes on the attack when his "lord and savior" is critiqued! Read your FB page mikey: It's like an instruction manual in attacks on Jews.

Why not tell the world that YOU are not Jewish and get over it. From your comments CONDEMNING those that wanted kosher meals at Citi Field, to your lie about not being a US citizen if you vote in a foreign election (NOT true by the way but why obfuscate your Jew hatred with FACTS!), you are the epitome of the 1939 style Berlin Jew that was happy to send fellow Jews to the ovens so he can be seen as "one of them." Perhaps you should seek out a plastic surgeon and fix that circumcision.

And I would suggest you conduct some fact checking so that queens like you can speak with at least a modicum of intelligence. Now go grab your obama EBT card and head to the local strip club and enjoy

If the Syrians for free speech got together for Americans with free speech who are ignored with people money who don' t care what the people want, what then? Why do I bother reading the news anyway?
All I now is that both Turkey and Iran fly F-4 Phantoms, and I love that plane, so, what's up with that?
