Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Saturday tweeted: “The killing of Palestinian demonstrators by Israeli forces in Gaza is tragic. It is the right of all people to protest for a better future without a violent response.”
Bereft of context, ignoring the Hamas Heart of Darkness government by terror and thousands of violent attacks against Israel, 13 years after the last Jew has left the Gaza Strip, the senator continued: “Meanwhile, the situation in Gaza remains a humanitarian disaster. The U.S. must play a more positive role in ending the Gaza blockade and helping Palestinians and Israelis build a future that works for all.”
Same to you, Bernie…
CNN’s Jake Trapper on Sunday reminded Sanders that the Israeli government had called those protests “violent terror demonstrations,” and that Hamas fighters had been interspersed throughout the crowd of demonstrators, using them as human shields to launch direct attacks on Israeli soldiers.
But Sanders refused to accept the Israeli version, insisting that, “from my understanding, when you have tens and tens of thousands of people engaged in a non-violent protest – I believe 15 or 20 people, Palestinians, have been killed and many, many others have been wounded – I think it’s a difficult situation, but my assessment is that Israel overreacted.”
To his credit, Sanders did not hammer in the point about the IDF overreacting – although, like all other critics, he did not suggest what the army should have done with those “tens and tens of thousands” who were charging the border, permit them to stampede into the Israeli communities only a stone’s throw away (literally)?
Instead, the Independent senator from Vermont who once spent a summer on a kibbutz went after US foreign policy, which refuses to engage in solving the Middle East problems in Syria, Iraq, and in Gaza. He recited Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, and suggested it could only be solved if the international community led by the US made peace between Israel and Hamas and addressed Gaza’a youth unemployment, power failures and sewer in the streets.
Not one word about Hamas, about the fact that the power crisis in Gaza was created by the Palestinian Authority, about the fact that the IDF presented the weapons found on the bodies of those Hamas infiltrators.
Like a true colonialist, Senator Sanders already knows what the problems of the Middle East are, and how a US intervention would solve them for eternity.
