On Monday, against the background of the UN Security Council’s vote on President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital, US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley tweeted: “The United States will not be told by any country where we can put our embassy.” She then added: “What we witnessed here today in the Security Council is an insult. It won’t be forgotten. It’s one more example of the UN doing more harm than good in addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

That vote was vetoed by the United States. Then, on Tuesday night, ahead of Thursday’s vote on largely the same issue, at the UN Assembly – where the US does not have veto power, Ambassador Haley tweeted: “At the UN we’re always asked to do more and give more. So, when we make a decision, at the will of the American people, about where to locate OUR embassy, we don’t expect those we’ve helped to target us.”
Therefore, Haley continued in a tone Israeli PM Netanyahu described as “Maccabean,” and threatened: “On Thursday there’ll be a vote criticizing our choice. The US will be taking names.”

According to Al Jazeera, the resolution, drafted by Egypt, “calls upon all states to refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions in the Holy City of Jerusalem.” Turkey is leading the move in the 193-member General Assembly.
Responding to criticism of the US vote at the UNSC, Haley said, “The fact that this veto is being done in defense of American sovereignty and in defense of America’s role in the Middle East peace process is not a source of embarrassment for us. It should be an embarrassment to the remainder of the Security Council.”
Bloomberg reported on Wednesday that Haley has been pushing UN members not to support the assembly resolution and has sent a letter to “key US allies” warning that “the president will be watching this vote carefully and has requested I report back on those countries who voted against us. We will take note of each and every vote on this issue.”
One diplomat told Bloomberg that his country’s UN mission was told that its vote on the resolution would be taken “personally” by Haley.
