The Ocean County Health Department and New Jersey’s EMS Task Force has ordered 1500 doses of the measles vaccine to be administered to those requesting the immunization for themselves or their children.

The two authorities set up large tents outside the CHEMED Health Clinic in Lakewood, New Jersey in order to administer the vaccinations to members of the Lakewood Jewish community, according to the Yeshiva World News website.

Hundreds of people have been streaming into the offices of their pediatricians in the community to receive the vaccinations after learning that at least four people were diagnosed with measles in Lakewood last week. At least one pediatrician in the community has already run out of the vaccine.

Part of the reason for the stampede, however, may be due to the fact that several synagogues have issued letters to their congregants from their rabbinic leaders, requesting that any child or adult who has not been vaccinated not enter the building. “We ask that everyone please abide by this, for the health and safety of the community,” said one letter.

“The Rav feels that those who are not vaccinated should not enter the shul premises and potentially expose the Tzibur (public) to the measles,” said another.

Both ended with a polite, “Thank you,” but the message was clear: “If you or your family has not been vaccinated, do not enter the building until this outbreak has passed. Thanks from all those who could be placed at risk.”
