New York University announced Thursday it is offering free tuition for all current and future medical students.

However, students will still have to pay for annual room and board, and other living expenses.

Tuition was to have been set at $55,000 for next year; most medical students will still face a bill of approximately $29,000 for living expenses.

School officials cited a shortage of researchers and primary care physicians, due to rising tuition and huge loans, totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars, as part of the reason for the initiative.
