Rain in Jerusalem

Israeli officials sent out notices to residents across the country warning about the stormy weather predicted to hit on Thursday night. The “dynamic” weather is expected to remain with Israel until at least Sabbath morning.

Gale-force winds, rain, thunderstorms, hail and snow – at least up at Mount Hermon, and in the Golan Heights – are forecast for the next 24 to 48 hours. High-risk flood warnings are up along the coast and in the eastern and southern wadis.

The rain is desperately needed by the drought-ridden land.

Emergency committees in most larger communities have already made preparations, including special hotlines.

Residents were warned to check their electrical systems, to make sure they have backup emergency lights, heating kits, candles and food supplies.

Israelis who owns homes were advised to reinforce and strengthen the fastenings on their rooftop solar water heaters and any other objects, such as gutters and satellite dishes. Those with balconies were reminded to clear stray items and put away light furniture that might otherwise be blown away, or knocked into something else – like a sliding glass door. Ditto for yards.

Municipalities are also warning families to “keep babies, the elderly and the chronically ill ‘snug and warm’ and to make sure to check on those who are isolated.”

For those with cars living along the coast: be sure not to park near drainage ditches, or you may find yourself without your vehicle.
