J Street also claims to be pro-Israel

Will the Real Debbie Wasserman Schultz Please Stand Up?

The latest AIPAC letter extolled Wasserman Schultz's virtues as a friend of AIPAC and as pro-Israel. Whether or not she opposes the senate sanctions bill is the question, though.

First she was touting the sanctions imposed on Iran as the single most significant reason why Jews should be supporting President Barack Obama for re-election this past fall.

That was Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23)(D), chief cheerleader for the quarterback at the top of her ticket, intimating that Obama was responsible for the passage of strict sanctions.

The truth, of course, was that Obama did his best to muzzle those sanctions every step of the way. And he did temper them as best he could by delivering exemptions to countries such as China, India and Turkey, thereby effectively removing at least several major incisors from the bite.

More recently it was reported that Wasserman Schultz has been aggressively backing the president’s position against Iran sanctions, and this time around she was allegedly telling her counterparts in the U.S. Senate not to support the Menendez-Kirk bill.

That bill, the Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act, calls for stiffened sanctions but only in the event Iran fails to fulfill its obligations under an agreement it entered into with the P5+1 countries, which became effective last Monday.

Wasserman Schultz was also reportedly telling her colleagues in the House that they should not sign on to the Cantor-Hoyer resolution which supports the Menendez-Kirk bill, although her Florida constituents are largely supportive of the measure.

And that’s where what we call a machloket arose.

The Washington Free Beacon reported on Jan. 14, that the south Florida regional arm of the venerable American pro-Israel institution, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, wagged its finger in Wasserman Schultz’s direction. It reported that word went out to some members asking Wasserman Schultz to explain why she was lobbying against the sanctions legislation.

The WFB cited a report in the Daily Beast in which Mara Sloan, a spokesperson for Wasserman Schultz, said the congresswoman believes in “holding off on new sanctions until the diplomacy plays out.” Sloan also said that the congresswoman was “not working against introducing Iran legislation.”

Contrasting the position offered to the Daily Beast, the WFB then served up another quote from Sloan which seems to present Wasserman Schultz as having a very different position.

“Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz has been a strong supporter of sanctions against Iran and will continue to be,” Sloan told a Miami Herald blogger who called asking for the congresswoman’s position.

That Miami Herald blogger, Marc Caputo, called for clarification in response to an ad aired by the conservative Emergency Committe for Israel.  That ad called out Wasserman Schultz for what it said were her efforts to block the Iran sanctions bill. The ECI ad aired on Sunday news shows and on sports shows in the south Florida area. It is also available on YouTube.

Wasserman Schultz’s spokesperson also told Caputo that right now, ” there is not a resolution on sanctions offered in the House. As soon as one is filed, she will review the language, as she does with any legislation and decide whether it helps to ensure that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.”

But that begs the question, because, according to an WFB earlier report citing congressional insiders, Wasserman Schultz was perhaps the driving force behind the implosion of the House resolution urging the Senate to pass the latest sanctions bill.

If you are diagramming the debate, get ready for a new player on the field.

Following the WFB versus DWS versions of anti-sanctions versus pro-sanctions positions, now comes another voice from AIPAC. On Jan. 24, a new AIPAC letter was sent out forwarding a statement from an AIPAC national board member denigrating earlier news reports suggesting Wasserman Schultz was anything but a stalwart defender of Israel.

“Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz has a strong record of support for the U.S.-Israel relationship,” read this AIPAC missive, written by Ike Fisher. “She is a good friend of Israel and a close friend of AIPAC, and we look forward to our continued work together for many years to come.”

Fisher, like Wasserman Schultz, is an inveterate supporter of President Obama.  According to (yet another) article in the Free Beacon about the matter, Fisher wrote to many pro-Israel activists in 2008 about then-candidate Barack Obama’s pro-Israel bona fides, implying that Fisher, like Wasserman Schultz may be pro-Israel, but even more than that, they are both pro-Democratic party.

After wading through the claims, the denials, the put-downs and the feigned even-handedness, it seems one can make a very few conclusive statements.

First, by the admission of her own spokesperson, and at least behind the scenes, Debbie Wasserman Schultz is not supportive of passing new sanctions legislation now. This is the case despite her having signed on to sanctions legislation as recently as this past summer, prior to the latest round of negotiations.

Second, it does seem as though someone at least connected with AIPAC contacted other AIPAC members who were unhappy with their impression that Wasserman Schultz was lobbying against the House Resolution supporting the Senate sanctions legislation.

Third, at least one AIPAC board member was unwilling to allow an impression to linger that AIPAC was unhappy with Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and so he went on the record extolling her virtues as a friend of AIPAC as well as a friend of Israel.

Fourth, that AIPAC board member did not address the question of whether or not Wasserman Schultz lobbied against the Cantor-Hoyer resolution in support of the current Senate sanctions bill.

In other words, in general, Wasserman Schultz can be considered pro-Israel.

J Street also considers itself pro-Israel.

The question that still needs to be answered is whether or not Wasserman Schultz tried to torpedo the House resolution and continues to try to torpedo the Senate sanctions bill.  Until Wasserman Schultz sets the record straight on that point, it looks like the WFB has made the more effective case.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz is only interested in two things. One is her position as DNC chair and the other being re-elected by her feckless Jewish constituents because she knows they are myopic. They are unquestioningly devoted to her despite her verbal twists and turns of the truith. As for AIPAC it is schizoid. It doesn't want to offend the President nor Ms. Wasserman Schultz, yet it wants its paying members to support Cantor-Hoyer and Kirk Menendez. When I watched the SOTUS tonight via the tube, I saw members of the GOP sitting the audience not applauding tonight when Obama extolled the virtues of feckless appeasing diplomacy avoiding war with a nuclear Iran. The West Wing crowd of Democrat apparatchiks posing as National Security mavens have fallen for the taqiyyah that the Supreme Ruler and President of Iran have used to hide their achievement of nuclear breakout. Verify with this crowd of Shiite Jew hating fanatics is like playing multidimensional Three Card Monte as sucker bait.

  2. I do not trust this woman. SHE IS A J street supporter. I think she pretends to support AIPAC. I have seen her at events. I think she wants our endorsement.

  3. Paul Perdue says:

Hang on…just a quick question: DWS is a farrrrr left liberal. Liberal Jews traditionally don't respect Israel. Are you actually giving me a reason to like her?

And regardless of your answer, I don't care for your anti-Jewish comments. (If I were a liberal I'd call you a racist.)

  4. Edith Palace says:

If she is not good for our people, don’t vote again and step away from contacts and supporting her. She sounds like a chameleon – wishy washy – something we Jews cannot afford to play with!!!

  5. the dangerous lunatic in the white house is the only issue. there are no other issues. indeed, that elephant is getting bigger than the room it is in.

  6. Millie Kashuk says:

I am glad I I do not live in her voting district, since she would not get my vote.

  7. John Keatts says:

Maybe it is time for the Jewish Voters to get alarmed. Looks like it might be against the Laws of American for a Jewish Lady to Read her Jewish Newspaper while at the Airport. The TSA is said to have held this lady in her 70's for simply reading her paper. Looks like, if this is true, America might be taking the lead in Harrasing the Jews in the USA. Why do so many of the Jewish People able to vote in the USA cast their votes for Liberan Socialist Democrats? After Germany during WW 2, I am very surprised as well as angered that any member of the Jewish People would ever do such a thing.
