Maureen O'Connell For State Senate,Editorial Board

In the February 6 special senate election in Nassau County, The Jewish Press endorses the Republican candidate, Maureen O'Connell. The special election is being held to fill the seat vacated by Michael Balboni, a Republican, who has left the senate to join the Spitzer administration as New York's top homeland security official.

Ms. O'Connell is a former assemblywoman and more recently the County Clerk of Nassau County. She has received rave reviews from Jewish community leaders there who say that she has always been sensitive to the community's needs and who speak enthusiastically of her commitment to address such issues as tuition relief for parochial school parents, security funding for shuls, yeshivas and community institutions and the promotion of traditional family values.

Ms. O'Connell comes strongly recommended by Brooklyn State Senator Martin Golden. And we concur. (We should note there are those whose views we respect on these matters who disagree with this assessment, but we nevertheless believe Ms. O'Connell to be the right choice.)
