Europe a Popular Summer Destination For American Kosher Travelers
Posted Jul 25 2007 Paris - American Jews who eat kosher are again filling kosher restaurants here after a hiatus of several years, according to travel sources.
Paris was always a popular destination for Jews eating kosher because of the large number of kosher restaurants here. But rising anti-Semitism and riots by Muslim students in past summers has kept the numbers down.
Even more popular for kosher eating Americans is Italy with its multi-faceted tourist attractions in such cities as Rome, Florence, Venice and even Milan. Large numbers of Orthodox Jews were recently seen touring in the scenic Tuscan region of Italy. A glatt kosher restaurant is now open to visitors at the Hotel Gemini.
Switzerland is yet another destination of choice, but more and more tourists can be seen in such Eastern European cities as Prague, Budapest, Warsaw and Krakow. The fact that each of these cities now has a kosher restaurant has encouraged many travelers to visit Europe.
In the Eastern European cities, many young tourists are taking part in exploring their heritage, most as part of organized tours. The increased traffic in Europe has not diminished what is turning out to be a banner summer for Israel with planes and hotels filling up many weeks in advance, a far cry from last summer during which the second Lebanese war took place. A new travel advisory for Israel issued by the State Department is apparently also having no effect on reservations.
