Kindness A Day Calendar: Making The World A Better Place, One Day At A Time
Posted Nov 07 2007
BERGENFIELD, NEW JERSEY - Areyvut, a New Jersey-based non-profit organization, announces the release of its 2008 "A Kindness a Day" calendar. This year's calendar marks the fourth edition of the popular desk companion.
Designed in a "one-day-per-page" format, the calendar offers 365 suggestions for people of all ages to better themselves and the world around them. Each entry is indexed and biblical, Talmudic or rabbinic sources accompany each suggested activity.
For example, one entry suggests, "When you encounter someone asking for charity, offer a friendly hello and smile in addition to money" with the Talmudic reference of "Whoever gives even a small coin to a poor man receives six blessings, but whoever speaks reassuringly to him receives eleven."
"In our fast-paced world where people are becoming more and more anonymous, this calendar offers many new ways to reach out and connect to others," says Daniel Rothner, founder and director of Areyvut.
"Doing just one act of kindness a day is a sure way to introduce a new and more fulfilling component into our lives and is sure to offer us the ability to better appreciate the world around us."
The calendar is suitable for both adults and children - as well as homes, schools and congregations - as a guide to help inculcate biblical values into one's life and as a springboard for discussion and study. The calendar includes a thematic index, which allows for better reference planning by educators and students alike.
"We had each child in the class look at the calendar entry for their birthday," says Julie Rockowitz, teacher at the Beth El Synagogue Hebrew School in New Rochelle, New York. "The child then had to act out the message and have their classmates identify the action. This way, we allowed the children to creatively express what kindness means to them."
The calendar's corresponding website, www.kindnessaday.com hosts weekly suggested activities, information about the calendar and where it can be ordered, and avenues for visitors to share their impressions and feedback about the product and its suggested activities.
Calendars can be purchased through Amazon.com, JudaicaPress.com, Areyvut.org, select Borders bookshops and at better Jewish book and gift stores nationwide.
