Keystone Jewish Center Holds Fifth Annual Menorah Lighting At City Hall In North Miami
Posted Jan 07 2009 The Keystone Jewish Center, led by Rabbi Daniel and Shulie Green, held its fifth annual Menorah Lighting at the City Hall of North Miami. The ceremony took place on the second night of Chanukah, December 22. City Council Members, Michael Blynn, Scott Galvin, and Jacque Despinosse were in attendance, as well as many other politicians, community leaders and members of the community.
Rabbi Daniel Green welcomed the crowd of over 250 people and introduced the various city officials who had assembled for the event. Councilman Blynn began by thanking Rabbi Green for approaching the City five years ago and requesting that a menorah be displayed on the City's property. Council Blynn said he hoped this tradition goes on for a very long time. He concluded, "The city appreciates you very much Rabbi." Councilman Galvin then addressed the crowd, thanking Rabbi Green for all he has done for the community. He shared that despite the city's large Jewish population there had never been a Menorah displayed in front of the Municipal Plaza until Rabbi Green came along. ![]() Rabbi Green at Menorah lighting
Mr. John Patrick Julian, a City Council Member of the city of North Miami Beach, was also present and wished everyone a Happy Chanukah. After the warm words of support from former mayors, Mr. John Stembridge and Mr. Frank Wolland, Rabbi Green briefly recapped the story of Chanukah. He spoke of the special time that we are in now, and also mentioned that in this Year of Hakhel, the Year of Gathering. The rabbi presented a beautiful plaque to the mayor and Council to mark the occasion. Green spoke of the terrible tragedy in Mumbai, India where his fellow Lubavitchers were brutally murdered by the hands of terrorists, and offered that the menorah lighting was a way to gather together to "push away the darkness." Rabbi Green then lit the 17-foot menorah. The drizzle that had begun a few minutes prior to the lighting stopped. Live music and dancing followed while everyone enjoyed fresh jelly doughnuts, hot chocolate and other Chanukah treats. All children received a free prize and had a great time.
