David Weprin for NYS Assembly

In the special election for the New York State Assembly seat in the 24th District in Queens, The Jewish Press heartily endorses David Weprin. At a time when New York faces great financial challenges, Mr. Weprin offers extraordinary credentials to the voters. For eight years he served with distinction on the New York City Council as chairman of the Finance Committee where he dealt, in a senior capacity, with virtually all of the economic issues the Assembly will have to confront.

We also note, as we have before, that he has been an ardent supporter of the communal work of Jewish organizations and is an observant Jew who has long demonstrated in many ways that religious conviction is no impediment to robust and creative public service.

I am a Jewish voter in the 24th Assembly District. Yesterday I received a mailing from candidate David Weprin. This mailing was obviously meant to turn voters against Mr. Weprin's opponent, Bob Friedrich, who is also Jewish, using phrases like "anti-semitic" and superimposing a swastika over a photograph of a supposed crime scene!!!! The use of a swastika is astoundingly offensive and completely unacceptable. If this is the level that Mr. Weprin is willing to lower himself to then I think many voters should reconsider whether they will vote for him.
