What is it that you want for your children? No doubt it is the same things that all parents want. We want our children to be healthy. We want them to be happy. We want them to be successful in life.

Easier said than done.

We all know that this does not happen by itself. Children must learn good middos in order to be both happy and successful. And where do they learn this? At home of course, in school, from role models, from their friends – and also from books. Good books.

After I finished reading The Amazing Fishing Rod I knew that this was a book I wanted to read to my children. I knew that this was a fun book that they would enjoy over and over. At the same time, I knew that this was a beautiful book that they would learn from.

The Amazing Fishing Rod is a fun-filled journey in a day in the life of Dovi the Bear. We watch him learn just how important it is to help others. Over the course of the day, he learns that help sometimes come from the most unusual and unexpected places.

Sometimes it is hard to help people, and sometimes you can help people by just using whatever it is you have at the time – even an amazing fishing rod.

We join Dovi the Bear on a bright sunny morning on his way to the pond to go fishing. He runs into his friends, each one with their own unique problem. We see how, with a little thought, a little creativity, and a lot of caring, Dovi accomplishes the big mitzvah of helping others – and helping himself at the same time.

Pearl Herzog has written an inspiring and age-appropriate book that every child will love to hear. Itai Bodel brilliantly illustrates this book with photographs and dolls that engage both the parents and their children.
