For the third year running, my wife and I had the opportunity to travel from Monsey to review Jin Glatt, a Chinese restaurant on Main Avenue in Passaic, NJ. Given our experiences of the past two years, our expectations were high and we were not disappointed.

Jin Glatt was founded by Tova Ackerman and Richard Austein. The restaurant prides itself on offering dishes cooked by Chinese chefs, based on tried and true recipes and carefully balanced ingredient proportions. The menu is accompanied by a “menu description” which can be quite helpful when trying to decide what to order. The menu is also available on a read-only website, so you can decide what you want before you arrive.

The proprietors of Jin Glatt want you to know that they are not just about General Tso’s or Sesame Chicken, Egg Rolls and Won Ton soup. The menu has over 200 choices, so don’t just have the same old thing.

For example, my wife and I tried the Singapore Chow Mei Fun, which is thin rice noodles, Chinese cabbage, onion, scallions, carrots, bok choy, and celery, flavored with Thai curry and other ingredients. You can get it with beef, chicken or veal. It has a slight kick, but won’t overpower you, as the spices are meant to intensify the flavor.

We also tried the Beef w/Eggplant and Garlic Sauce. This meal is very visually appealing, to say nothing of the taste. The eggplant is Chinese Eggplant with has fewer or no seeds and has none of the bitterness of regular eggplant.

Jin Glatt, as we mentioned in our previous review, has a great Sushi menu. The newest item to taste is the Giant California Roll. Also, fried tempura crunchies are now available to add to your sushi rolls.

Jin Glatt’s lunch and dinner combos are pleasing for both your palate and your pocket. The kids will enjoy themselves with the selections on the kid’s menu which has such items as Sweet and Sour Chicken, Chicken Nuggets and some of the most popular adult items. They also have selections of “Western” foods like hot dogs, French fries, etc.

Jin Glatt also has a complete parve Nine Days Menu and they try to accommodate the community as much as possible. All food is cooked to order and MSG-free. Special orders are usually not a problem, so don’t be shy about asking.
