New Head Of School For Weinbaum Yeshiva H.S.

The Board of Trustees of Weinbaum Yeshiva high School has proudly announced that Rabbi Jonathan Kroll will serve as its new Head of School effective August 1, 2013. Rabbi Kroll joins Weinbaum Yeshiva High School from S.A.R High School in Riverdale, New York, where he has held teacher and associate principal titles since 2003.

“Rabbi Kroll meets and exceeds the stringent criteria set forth by the school’s board,” said Jeffrey Harris, president of Weinbaum’s Board of Trustees. “Rabbi Kroll embodies the rare combination of scholar, leader, nurturer and mentor. We have no doubt his selection will be welcomed by all who have the opportunity to work with him. We believe the combination of Rabbi Kroll working with Mrs. Kanner, Weinbaum’s principal; Shimmie Kaminetsky, Weinbaum’s executive director; and our leadership team will provide our school with an extremely talented management team for years to come. We feel fortunate and are very excited to have Rabbi Kroll joining Weinbaum Yeshiva High School.”

“I am very excited to join the team of educators, students and families that make up the Weinbaum Yeshiva High School Community,” said Rabbi Kroll. “I look forward to leading this excellent school to even greater heights.”

Rabbi Kroll received his BS in Accounting at Yeshiva University, his MS in Secondary Education from Azrieli Graduate Institute of Yeshiva University, and his rabbinic ordination at YU’s Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary.

Rabbi Kroll, his wife Jennifer, and their children Leora, Avi, Akiva and Eli will relocate to the Boca Raton area during the summer, although Rabbi Kroll will be actively involved in school planning and leadership decisions starting immediately.

Weinbaum Yeshiva High School, the largest Jewish high school in Florida, is singularly focused on inspiring and challenging its more than 250 students in all facets of their education. Weinbaum strives to inspire students to make a lifelong commitment to Jewish values and observance and to challenge them with an excellent college and yeshiva preparatory program, enabling them to gain admission and to succeed at the finest institutions of higher learning in the U.S. and abroad.

Weinbaum celebrates the ideals of Ahavat Yisrael (love of the Jewish people), Tikkun Olam (communal responsibility) and Medinat Yisrael (the state of Israel).

This past Lag B’Omer, we were blessed to make our first upsherin, where we celebrate our son’s first hair cut. It’s a wonderful milestone that mimics the three years that we refrain from plucking a tree’s first fruits and symbolizes the entry of the child into the world of Torah learning. It’s a clear sign to everyone; this boy is no longer a baby.

The importance of death customs has been ingrained in me since birth. When I served as a shomeret for my grandmother, I was instructed not to eat, drink or perform a mitzvah in the same room. In the shock of death, it seemed rather inane to be told it would be considered mocking the dead. My grandmother was gone; she couldn’t do those things because she didn’t exist anymore, a fact that still makes me tear up.

Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt”l, who passed away on 28 Tammuz, (July18) this year at age 102, spent all of his days and most of his nights learning Torah. One of the most respected Torah figures in Los Angeles, Rabbi Gruman has been described as “The Los Angeles link in the mesorah of the yeshiva world” by Rabbi Nachum Sauer. As a talmid in Lakewood in the 1950s, Rabbi Gruman received semicha from Rav Aaron Kotler, zt”l, and Rav Moshe Feinstein, zt”l. Soon after, he moved to Los Angeles.
