On Sunday, December 7, Talmudic University of Florida held the largest event in the yeshiva’s history, in honor of its 40th anniversary. More than 1,000 people took part, celebrating the achievement and vision of its founders, Rosh HaYeshiva Yochanan and Rebbetzin Rifka Zweig.

Alumni and talmidim from South Florida, across the country, and around the world converged in Miami for the grand celebration. The weekend started with an alumni Shabbaton filled with shiurim and inspiration, and culminated with the Sunday evening dinner.

“It was truly a magnificent affair and a true kiddush shem shamayim” said Rabbi Yechiel M. Nakdimen, one of the original 10 students who started the yeshiva in 1974 and who now lives in Lakewood. “It was inspiring to see so many people come to pay tribute to the rosh hayeshiva.”

The yeshiva’s 40th year celebration was held at the newly renovated Hilton Miami Downtown Hilton at Omni. “The gala was a celebration of Torah and all that our community has achieved over the past 40 years,” said Rabbi Ira Hill, Talmudic University administrator.

Talmudic University, also known as Yeshiva v’Kollel Bais Moshe Chaim, was started in 1974. Rosh HaYeshiva and Rebbetzin Zweig moved to Miami Beach from Jerusalem with the goal of building a yeshiva focused on in-depth Torah study. As the Jewish community began to grow, the yeshiva created a network of educational institutions for every age group. What began as a small yeshiva of 10 students in 1974 now has almost eight hundred students enrolled in various schools and programs.
