It wasn’t so long ago that kosher dining options were limited to delis, pizza places, Israeli pita shops, and restaurants where “traditional Jewish dishes” were served. Slowly the fare has expanded. Chinese, Mexican, and Japanese kosher restaurants have emerged in many communities. It is an exciting and delicious time for kashrut observers to broaden choices for their palates and plates.

The South Florida area, with its large local year-round base along with tourists, snowbirds, and visitors, has been at the forefront of innovative kosher cuisine. The popular Thai Treat Restaurant, now in its 12th year, serves incredible Thai food and is a favorite spot for kosher diners from all over the world.

Naresh Choudhury and his wife, June, are the owners and operators of Thai Treat. June, who is from Thailand, recreated mouthwatering Thai recipes, substituting kosher products yet keeping the authentic taste. The menu is a resounding hit.

Mr. Choudhury had a dilemma, though. He handmade all the sauces and curry pastes using kosher products. But there was no restaurant supply store or shop that carried the products as kosher items. Delighted diners enjoyed the tasty sauces and condiments and wanted to bring them home.

So Mr. Choudhury went to work to accommodate his customers. It took him several years to create the line of packaged condiments that were in such demand. Thai Treat Restaurant, which is under the strict rabbinical supervision of km KOSHER MIAMI, collaborated with the Star K hashgacha and the product was born.

The ingredients started from the fresh produce of Mr. Choudhury’s own garden. They included fresh basil, lemon grass, lime leaf, galangal (Thai ginger), red onions, and dry red chiles. Cilantro, curry powder, and cumin were also used.

The gourmet Thai condiments were introduced after Passover this year. The jars have leaped off the shelves. The selections include Thai Massaman Curry, Thai Yellow Curry, Thai Red Curry, Thai Chili Paste, and Thai Green Curry. All allergen-free and gluten-free, vegan and parve.

Mr. Choudhury will be in New Jersey on November 11 and 12 to introduce his product at Kosherfest. It’s sure to be a huge success.
