Touro College South, in cooperation with The Shul of Bal Harbour, will present a series of three workshops on new teaching technologies for educators in Jewish schools. Facilitated by Dr. Henry Abramson, dean of Academic Affairs and Student Services, the workshops will focus on the implications of web-based teaching tools for traditional Jewish education.

“We are living in times when the rapid advance of technology threatens to outpace our ability to comprehend its implications,” says Abramson. “The Internet has given us power before understanding, the how before the why. This situation is especially pronounced in generational terms: what does it mean for traditional education when any student with a smartphone has instant access to more information than anyone else in the room, including the teacher? What does it mean when the classroom bully takes a playground taunt to social media? On the other hand, if we learn to harness this power effectively, teachers can leverage literally global resources to advance education in a manner that has not been seen since Gutenberg invented the printing press.”

The workshops will focus on the implications of web-based teaching tools from online “flipped” video classes to crowdsource learning through educational social media tools. Open to the community as a whole, the course is optimized for educators in Jewish schools and is approved for Greater Miami Board of License credit. The workshops will be held on November 12, 19, and 26 from 7:30-9:00 p.m. at The Shul, 9540 Collins Avenue. Space is limited. For more information and to register, please visit www.miamijewisheducators.com.
