RASG Hebrew Academy in Miami Beach recently commemorated Yom Hazikaron, the solemn remembrance day for Israel’s fallen heroes, and Yom Ha’Atzmaut, the joyous celebration of the birthday of the Jewish State.

A community event on the evening of April 15 was held at the school auditorium. Students, parents and dignitaries joined together to honor fallen soldiers and battles that were pivotal to the liberation and existence of modern Israel. Consul General Chaim Shacham spoke of the importance of Jewish continuity and of making aliyah. The solemn ceremony was followed by a festive party that included music, dancing, Israeli food and a firework display.

Yom Ha’Atzmaut was a day of jubilation. Students, wearing special blue t-shirts (sponsored by WIZO), enjoyed a day entirely dedicated to Israel. They davened and had an Israeli flag-raising ceremony and then proceeded to the Miami Beach Civic Center where Mayor Matti Herrera Bower greeted the children and acknowledged their celebration.

The students returned to the school, which had been turned into a “virtual Israel” complete with hands-on activities that included walking through underground tunnels at the Kotel, visiting Masada and other areas of special interest, planting in a kibbutz and participating in an IDF boot camp.

The Hebrew Academy is an Orthodox college and yeshiva preparatory school serving students through grade 12. The Hebrew Academy inspires students to achieve their fullest potential and instills eternal Torah values in a changing world.
