As a result of the combined efforts of administration, faculty and student body members toward implementing the academic mission of Touro College Los Angeles (TCLA), the college has grown mightily over the past year. TCLA’s focus on developing innovative programs is being lauded in academic circles.

Under the direction of Dr. Lucien Chocron, co-chair of the Psychology Department, exciting student programs are underway. Touro’s upcoming Crisis Helpline (an evening project) is in its second round of training and expects to be up and running this summer. This program is designed to develop the psychology students’ listening and counseling skills and engage them in real-life experience in their field. In addition to developing and managing the TCLA Crisis Helpline, Chocron is also in the midst of introducing a mentoring program for TCLA students, meant to foster tutoring programs, camaraderie and teaching skills. Its goal is to also further enhance the students’ academic resume and better prepare them for graduate schools. TCLA plans to introduce the mentoring program this fall.

In an effort to prepare its students for not only graduate school study but also for future participation in the work force, TCLA recently presented its director of Career Services, Dr. Ron Ansel, to conduct a seminar on navigating the job market. Among other skills, resume writing, networking and interviewing were stressed. Ansel also offered private advice to interested students.

TCLA’s 2012 graduates have been accepted to some of the most illustrious post-graduate programs in the country. This derives from TCLA’s continuing commitment to advance the concept of proper learning environments, leading to producing students of the highest quality.

TCLA is also building continuing education programs for Jewish private schools in order to help them further their professional development. The college’s students have also been volunteering for such programs as Chai Lifeline and Aish, and the student council has joined Bikur Cholim in an attempt to recruit blood donors for them. TCLA takes great pride in the outstanding community service given by their students.

As the only regionally accredited Orthodox Jewish college on the West Coast, TCLA is nearing the completion of its seventh year. This year marks its sixth graduating class.
