All of this aside, your wife’s suspicion may be unfounded; the vase could have been picked up at a flea market or as a store sample, which would explain the ill-fitting box. She should take a cue from the best gift she ever got – you – and tell her friend how much she loves it. In fact, the next time she comes for dinner, your wife can fill the vase with flowers and use it as a table centerpiece. This would not only serve as a show of gratitude but will probably engender a conversation that may bring its origin to light.

To anyone finding themselves with the opportunity to re-gift: Make sure the item is not personalized, be certain to remove any gift card that may have originally accompanied the gift, and present it to someone who you know will appreciate it — rather than because you have no use for it.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience, which we all can learn from.
