All women in all shelters receive initial monetary help through the Toronto Friends’ Fund or from other sources of donations. The Knesset recently passed a law, introduced by Knesset Member Zahava Gal’on, which grants every woman who leaves a shelter an “acclamation” grant in the sum of 8,000 shekel plus an additional 500 shekel for every child, to the maximum amount of 10,000 shekel – all on condition that she will not return to her husband. That law, however, has yet to be implemented.
