Giant Dreidel Featured At Thanksgiving Parade

Thanksgiving parade dreidel

As they do every year, crowds packed the streets of midtown Manhattan on Thanksgiving for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

This year’s parade, the 87th annual extravaganza of marching bands, floats, and giant balloons, featured something really unique and different: a balloon/float of a large blue dreidel.

With Thanksgiving and the first day of Chanukah coinciding this year, several Jewish spectators voiced their appreciation and approval.

“Chanukah is the original holiday of thanksgiving,” said Jennifer Blum. “So the fact that Thanksgiving and Chanukah come out at the same time this year and that the parade recognized this very unusual occurrence is really great.”

“I read somewhere that this will not happen again for a very long time,” a 12 year old who gave her name as Alizah told The Jewish Press. “So I’m happy to be here and see the dreidel in the parade.”

According to the Chabad.org date converter, the next time Thanksgiving and Chanukah will coincide in any way will be on the eve of Chanukah in the year 2070.
