Yeshiva Derech HaTorah of Brooklyn will be writing its very first Sefer Torah. The last mitzvah in the Torah is the commandment for each person to write a Sefer Torah. The Rambam teaches that a person can appoint a scribe to write the Torah for him, and since a Sefer Torah is pasul when even one letter is incorrect or missing, the mitzvah can be fulfilled by writing even a single letter of a completed scroll.

It’s fitting that Yeshiva Derech HaTorah’s Sefer Torah is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Jeffrey Ben-Zvi, z”l, cherished member of the Derech HaTorah parent body and vibrant force in the Flatbush community.

Dr. Ben-Zvi specialized in gastroenterology and was recognized as an expert in his field. In addition to his medical expertise, Dr. Ben-Zvi was known for being a remarkable and humble ba’al chesed and devoted member of Flatbush Hatzolah, demonstrating great mesirat nefesh for anyone he could help. He knew the importance of living a Torah life and making Torah real and applicable. The use of the Sefer Torah in the school will be an aliyat neshamah for Dr. Ben-Zvi and perpetuate his legacy.

Coming together to write a Sefer Torah as a community is an inspiring and monumental way to fulfill this special mitzvah of Ketivat Sefer Torah. In addition to providing the yeshiva with a much-needed Sefer Torah, it will enable the continued growth of the school.
