On the day after the elections, many of us gathered in the old editorial office to watch John Kerry concede to George W. Bush. Our focus, however, was not so much on the choices we had made the day before, but rather on the choices we were faced with that day. What choices? Wild cherry, strawberry cheesecake, peach, bubble gum, pink grapefruit, tutti frutti or lemon meringue? These are some of the 34 flavors of Gimbal’s (OU, parve) gourmet jelly beans.

A family business for four generations, Gimbal’s began producing candy in 1898. Amongst some of their well known products (besides the jelly beans) are soft and chewy Chews in a variety of flavors and shapes. These original fruit slices are still made with a decades old recipe. We also had the opportunity to sample their licorice Scottie Dogs that are now available in sugar free/low carb. As a matter of fact, Gimbal’s has a whole line of products with only 4 grams of net impact carbs. You can find Gimbal’s on the web at www.gimbalscandy.com

Granola has a long and involved history that dates back to the 1700’s and a man named Sylvester Graham – the father of Graham crackers. In the 1870’s, Dr John Harvey Kellog took hearty grains, baked and then crumbled them and walla, granola cereal was born! More than one hundred years later, Northern Gold Foods (OU, dairy) has perfected the process. Northern Gold granola cereal is available in four flavors – honey almond, vanilla almond, cashews and raisins and blueberry/strawberry. By far, the blueberry/strawberry was our favorite. With dehydrated berries that are bursting with flavor, your bowl of cereal becomes a feast for your taste buds.

Northern Gold cereals are made with natural ingredients like whole oats, honey and soybean oils, and will turn a boring breakfast of cereal with milk into a yummy breakfast treat. You can find Northern Gold products in your local supermarket or on the web at www.northerngold.com

The Fine Foods from Israel campaign was launched some time ago with a goal of focusing out attention on products imported from Israel. Some of the finest Israeli foods on your grocer’s shelf come from Tnuva (OU, Vaadas Hamehadrin, parve and dairy). Under the label Emek, Tnuva produces an incredible line of sliced cheese. The Emek light is a semi-soft cheese with only 2.5 grams of fat per slice – and it tastes great. We have tried a number of low fat cheeses and many of them taste very fake. This cheese is just good.

Try it in a sandwich with mayonnaise and tomato or use it to make grilled cheese – either way it’s delicious and healthy. The line also includes a pizza cheese, which is flavored with oregano and spices.

Under the Olivia label is a magnificent salad dressing in a very distinctive bottle. Made with fresh ingredients like oil, pickled cucumbers and garlic, this garlic vinaigrette has become a very popular choice in our home. The excellent taste is reflected in the beauty of the label design – it makes you want to open the bottle and try some right in the store. You can find Tnuva produces in stores throughout the New York area, and in select locations in Baltimore and Boston.
