The coffee bean has an interesting and varied history. One legend has it that an Ethiopian sheepherder noticed his sheep becoming hyperactive after eating “fruit” from a green plant. In another legend a group of Arabians were exiled to the desert without food. In desperation they boiled the “fruit” of an unknown green plant and the liquid saved their lives.

It doesn’t really matter which story is true. What matters is having a good cup of coffee and by 1475, a coffee shop had been opened in Constantinople and Turkish law made it legal for a woman to divorce her husband if he did not provide her with her daily quota of coffee.

Looking for a really good cup of coffee? The White Coffee Corporation (OU parve) makes wonderful coffee. Using the latest technology and European preparation (a process in which the beans are cleaned very often by hand) the company has produced a line of coffee with a rich and sophisticated taste. While its business is mostly foodservice and private label, you can order directly from the company’s website and take advantage of promotions and specials.

In time for Chanukah they have produced a line of specialty coffees – Dreidel, a blend with a pleasant hazelnut flavor; Celebration, a nice combination of dark and light roasted coffee, and Festival, whose deep, rich taste is perfect for a true coffee connoisseur.
