The Tosfos Yomtov was convinced that the death of 300,000 –600,000 Jews during the Chmielnicki massacres of 1648-49 were because of improper Tefila. Communicated: Tefilla

Chillul Tefila Bifarhesia, as well as halachicly challenged verbiage and dress, are external manifestations of a critical lack of personal yiras shomayim which has lethal consequences.

Gloria Schreiber: Working Below The Radar

“My father was traveling down south to sell watches and he was sold on my mother. When my grandmother met him the first thing she asked was if she could get a watch wholesale, “ Gloria chuckles at this bit of family lore. Laughter comes easily to this good-natured woman who approaches each day with a sense of adventure.

Gloria and Sar-El volunteers packing supplies.

Her parents settled on West First Street and Avenue P in Brooklyn where they davened in the senior Rabbi Kahane’s shul.

Gloria has fond memories of returning frequently to Mahanoy to visit her grandparents. She points out that the Jewish residents never experienced any form of anti-Semitism but she does recall one of the local children once asking her, “how come none of your people work in the mines?”

Gloria is accustomed to answering even the most difficult questions related to the Jewish experience when she puts on her other hat as a docent for the Museum of Jewish Heritage in downtown Manhattan. Every Tuesday, for the past six years, this energetic volunteer has informed and inspired young students, introducing them to the difficult world of the Holocaust. She is especially gratified to receive emotional letters from children who write they have gained new insights and were profoundly affected by her talks. “I love speaking to school children who are so eager to learn about our history.”

During these volatile times when the news is dominated by flotillas and fly-ins manned by fanatical volunteers whose sole agenda is to undermine and indoctrinate, extraordinary people like Gloria Schreiber work tirelessly below the radar leading lives of purpose and meaning. They never seek public recognition for their selfless gestures of goodwill and never anticipate that one day their years of commitment would be rewarded with the honor of raising the flag.

A recent study from the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine found that people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities are more prone to dental disease than the general population and that further research is required to identify effective interventions.

Between 1997 and 2008, the number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) increased almost fourfold, according to the National Health Interview survey. The 2007 National Survey of Children’s Health indicated that 1.1 percent of all children born in this country are on the autism spectrum.

We are born to learn, in whatever capacity we are able. We study the world with our senses, and try to understand it. Our special children have more of a challenge, but they are just as interested in knowing what is going on around them. We know that because we observe their keen interest in everything we do and say. We need to nurture this interest, to encourage it.

The American Inclusion Movement’s First Wave, which was focused solely on Inclusion in the workforce, has been almost entirely forgotten. It occurred in the 1930’s, decades before the 1960’s zeitgeist brought about broader and more famous changes in pro-disability policy, architectural barriers, and independent living.

Winter is here and with it comes a whole host of viruses that are somehow less prevalent in the warmer seasons. Poor winter, it’s saddled with the nickname of “cold and flu season.”

Picture it, a busy Sunday afternoon with traffic moving briskly along Ocean Parkway, a major Brooklyn thoroughfare linking the brownstones of Park Slope in the north with the beaches and amusement parks of Coney Island in the south. Suddenly everything comes to a halt.

As the members of the I.D.F. lined up for the daily flag raising ceremony held on the Tel Hashomer Army Base outside of Tel Aviv, Gloria Schreiber approached the flagpole with a mixture of pride and awe.

As the members of the I.D.F. lined up for the daily flag raising ceremony held on the Tel Hashomer Army Base outside of Tel Aviv, Gloria Schreiber approached the flagpole with a mixture of pride and awe. Standing at attention, dressed in fatigues, she grasped the rope, pulled gently and watched the white and blue flag slowly ascend.

“What’s new?”

It was a casual question, posed to me by Irene Klass when we met at a Jewish women’s lecture during the fall of 1994.

When seven year-old Ariel tearfully ran into the kitchen complaining of pain it was his younger brother Shalom who came to the rescue. “Should I get you something to learn so you will feel better?” asked the six year old?
