It was September 25, 2006. Tammy, an oblivious, petite, third grader lay in bed, counting her stationary collection, when she decided she needed a drink. As she descended the staircase, she was surprised to see her mother dressed in this bubby-like gown.

“Ma,” Tammy exclaimed. “I always tell you how much I hate that dress! You look like an old lady in it! Yesterday, when Tzippy came over, she asked if you were my bobby!”

Mommy smiled and said she felt the most comfortable in it. Tammy made an upset look and started heading to the kitchen to get her drink, when she suddenly realized her mother was clutching a suitcase.

This is strange, she thought!

“Ma,” she began, “Why -” when out of the blue her father came and interrupted her. “Chaya (Tammy’s mother’s name) what is Tammy doing up so late?”

Mommy took a peek at her watch and gasped, “Oh my goodness! Your right! Tammy, go head upstairs and Daddy will come upstairs to tuck you in!”

Tammy was confused and looked at her father, but all he did was smile back. It was all so strange, Tammy couldn’t think straight, so she headed upstairs forgetting why she had come down in the first place. All night she had troubled thoughts in her head, but decided to ignore the topic for three days. On the third day, she noticed there was no supper ready, and it made her even more confused.

“Daddy,” she exclaimed. “Where’s Mommy? She’s never home anymore!”

Daddy father smiled and said, “Mommy just went to visit the doctor.”

That’s strange Tammy thought. Mommy never goes to the doctor for so long! Suddenly the pieces fell together like a puzzle. “My mother is sick,” Tammy thought. “Why wouldn’t anyone tell me?”

Tammy ran upstairs, flew on her bed and started crying.

The next day seemed like total darkness, the wind was howling and the leaves were flying. Tammy thought it was as if the world was coming to an end. She forced herself out of bed, and in class, all she had was troubled thoughts. She lay her down on her desk, when unexpectedly, she was called to the office!

Mrs. Guwarz, the office assistant, looked at Tammy with a huge smile on her face. “Mazal tov!!” she exclaimed. “Your mother has just given birth to a baby girl!”
