Dr. Bernie Kastner grappled with the reality of his son’s death, facing the most exquisite pain of humankind. A Yeshiva University graduate and reality therapist certified at The William Glasser Institute, he wrote this book with an eye to coping with that pain himself and sharing the strengthening thoughts with bereaved readers. The author succeeded. Pages 94 and 95 of his 215-page hardcover book offer documented glimpses into the afterlife that can soothe survivors. There is more healing content throughout the text.

Understanding the Afterlife in This Life is prepared in sections. The first is entitled “Seeing Behind the Curtain,” and describes what we know about life after death. The second section is divided into 11 segments detailing the spiritual and emotional journeys of both the deceased and his or her survivors. The third and last section is a literary review covering the topics, Overcoming the Fear of Death, Near Death Experiences, Terror Management, Logotherapy (finding meaning in a difficult life) and other relevant concerns.

Designed to be read in any order, Understanding the Afterlife in This Life presents insights, issues and problem resolutions that can be absorbed by the reader at his/her own pace. Each of us heals at our own rate and travels on our own path toward acceptance- there is no one-size-fits all way to heal.

Understanding the Afterlife in This Life belongs in the offices of mental health therapists, clergy, public and school libraries, and private homes. It would make a superb gift for mourners in need of a healthy transition to daily life after dealing with a terrible loss.
