Jewish Filmmaker Running for Parliament in Senegal

Friday, June 29th, 2012

Laurence Gavron was born in France to a Jewish family. She’s lived in Dakar, Senegal, for the past ten years, where she is a film director and a writer. Fascinated by African cultures, Laurence Gavron has produced documentaries on local musicians, and on the work of film director Djibril Diop Mambéty. She also writes regularly for the local papers, took part in several photo exhibitions, and wrote two novels: “Marabouts d’ficelle” (2000) and “Boy Dakar” (2008).

And she’s running for parliament, a white, Jewish woman in a black, African country.

“I’m a Senegalese of French origin, ‘a product of diversity,’ as they say in France,” the 57-year-old redhead told AFP in the garden of her Dakar home.

“If all the people who have said they will vote for me really do vote for me, then I shall certainly be elected” on Sunday, she said.

According to AFP, if Gavron wins, she’ll be only the second white person to have taken Senegalese nationality and win a seat in parliament. The first was Jean-Baptiste Collin, a Frenchman who was did all of the above in 1961.

“Laurence is entirely Senegalese, even if she has white skin. She has a place on our electoral list,” El Hadji Sarr, one of the leaders of the left-wing Party for the Emergence of Citizens – Tekki told AFP.

The group, which currently has only one member, a woman, in the outgoing National Assembly of 150 seats, is led by economist Mamadou Lamine Diallo. His principles appear to be: competence, morality, fairness, good governance, transparency and participation by citizens. Gavron says she identifies with all of them.

“I’ve always had a left-wing bent. I am incapable of voting for the right, it’s something that I’ve never done,” she said.

Gavron will benefit from a new law passed under former president Abdoulaye Wade, demanding complete parity between men and women on voting lists. The law will be applied for the first time in Sunday’s election.

“This is something very good, particularly in Senegal, where much injustice is done to women,” Gavron said.

Gavron was married to German cameraman who died when she was 32 and pregnant with her second child.

“The first time I set foot on Senegalese soil was 25 years ago. I’m in love with this country,” said Gavron. According to AFP, she is now married to a Senegalese man, speaks fluent Wolof and reasonable Peul, two of the country’s 20 or so official languages.

Gavron’s agenda is “to work against all kinds of injustice, the terrible things sometimes done in the name of religion or tradition … excisions, forced marriages with young girls, the exploitation of children.”

She is in 28th place on the electoral list presented by Tekki which, judging by the last election, will probably get only one or two seats.

Iran VP Says Talmud to Blame for Drugs Trade

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

The teachings of the Talmud are the driving force behind the international drugs trade – so said Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi on Wednesday, according to AFP.

Rahimi’s remarks came at an international anti-drug conference in Tehran, attended by many foreign diplomats, and AFP says it was “a rare diatribe by an Iranian official targeting the Jewish faith, rather than the state of Israel.”

“The spread of narcotics in the world emanates from the teachings of the Talmud… whose objective is the destruction of the world,” Rahimi said.

“The Talmud teaches that it is lawful to acquire wealth through legal and illegal means… which gives (the Jews) the right to destroy humanity,” he said.

And then he added: “If one seeks what lies behind all forms of corruption, there is the repugnant face of Zionists. This is the same case for the narcotics trade … whose primary operator is the Zionist regime.”

There you go, the Zionists are spreading their Talmudic drugs around the world and nobody’s doing anything.

What’s he going to say when the Sium of the Daf Yomi comes around soon? It’ll be like Woodstock for Zionists.

What are all the Haredim going to do when they realize the Iranians been calling them Zionists?

Israel’s foreign minister criticized the United Nations and European Union for sending representatives to the Iranian conference.

By the way, Rahimi claims to hold a Ph.D. from Oxford University. But Oxford University doesn’t seem to recall any of it. Maybe he’s holding someone else’s Ph.D.

Jews, Gays, Rights Activists Protest Ahmadinejad in Rio

Monday, June 18th, 2012

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s welcome on the sunny Ipanema beach in Rio was less than warm from an eclectic group of Jews, human rights activists, and homosexuals, who arrived Sunday to protest the Iranian president’s attendance at a UN summit on sustainable development.

The protest was organized by a group called the Commission Against Religious Intolerance.

“We want the world to know that religious hatred harms the environment and Ahmadinejad represents hatred. Sustainable development encompasses human rights,” Ivanir dos Santos representative of the commission told the AFP.

“Citizens in Rio have good reason to be appalled by this visit.  Mahmoud Ahmadinejad embodies the ideology of intimidation and violence fomented by Iran’s militant Islamic Republic,” Alex Traiman, director of the award-winning documentary exposing the Iranian regime’s radical ideology, Iranium, told the Jewish Press.  “For decades, Iran has expanded its influence in South America, through large oil contracts and joint terror operations.  Iranians carried out mass-scale bombings in Argentina in the 90′s while Hizbullah, an Iranian terror proxy, has cells all over the continent.”

Unlike previous demonstrations organized by the commission, no Muslims took part in Sunday’s rally.

“Muslims do not take part in demonstrations against a fellow Muslim, even if they disagree with him,” commission representative dos Santos told the AFP.

Demonstrators waved placards in support of Iranian nationals, but also carried banners stating “Rio does not welcome Mahmoud Ahmadinejad” and chanted “Ahmadinejad out of Brazil” to the beat of drums.

Michel Gherman, head of the Hillel of Rio, told AFP that Ahmadinejad’s visit “is an opportunity to criticize his hateful speech denying the Holocaust as well as the persecution of homosexuals and Bahais”.

The UN summit will include discussions on eradicating poverty and protecting the environment.

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with an attack on three Jewish teens in Lyon in southeastern France.

The attack, which occurred June 2, took place in Villeurbanne, outside Lyon.

The attackers, who reportedly numbered about 10, used a hammer and an iron bar, injuring two of the Jewish teens in the head. The two were hospitalized.

The attackers have been described as “of North-African origin.”

Toulouse Police Preparing to Raid Al-Qaeda Man Who Murdered Jewish Children

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

French police have surrounded the holdout of a man they believe was responsible for the killings of seven people in south west France.

The suspect is reportedly refusing to surrender to police following the pre-dawn raid in the Croix-Daurade district of the city of Toulouse and his mother has been brought to the scene to help negotiations.

An attempt to arrest the suspect appears imminent.

Up to seven shots rang out in the raid. Reports also say the suspect’s brother has been arrested in the raid.
France’s interior minister Claude Gueant told reporters at the scene that the suspect has links to Jihadist and Salafist groups.

The elite officers were injured during a Wednesday pre-dawn raid in Toulouse, as the search continued for the gunman who entered the school Monday.

The suspect is thought to be 24-years-old and had reportedly previously traveled to the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which has been known to house al Qaeda safehouses.

Chief prosecutor in Paris, Francois Molins, who is monitoring the investigation in Toulouse, warned there could be more murders.

“At this stage, everything is being done to identify, find and stop the perpetrator, of these three killings as fast as possible,” he said. “In these exceptional circumstances, I think it is obvious that we are up against an extremely determined individual, who knows he’s being hunted, who could strike again.”
