Credible Bomb Threats Ground Two US Airliners in Atlanta, GA

Sunday, January 25th, 2015

Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to escort two passenger jets into Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport – one of the largest airports in the world — at 3 pm local time Saturday.

The move came in response to what was deemed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to be “credible” bomb threats on the Twitter social media site.

Airport spokesman Reese McCranie told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “We believe the threats to be credible,” but declined to explain why.

“While authorities have not yet released information on the Twitter account responsible for the specific threatening tweets, someone calling himself ‘King Zortic’ first posted messages to Delta on Twitter around noon that said, ‘I have a bomb on one of your planes, but I forgot which one when I left the airport. Can you help me find it?,’ and ‘It was from Portland to Atlanta, I forgot the flight number, though. It was something like DL156 or DL1556 I forgot the order.’

“Another tweet read, ‘It was smuggled through one of the back entrances because the airport didn’t have much security around one of the entrances so the bomb is at the back of the plane. Everyone will know when it’s detonated.’

“Messages later were sent to Southwest Airlines from the same Twitter account read (sic), ‘A bomb was placed on SWA2492. It will be detonated at a random time of my choosing,’ and ‘If anything happens to me I’ll make sure that more flights are targeted. I strongly suggest you don’t try anything stupid,’” the newspaper reported.

In Atlanta, the two targeted flights taxied to a remote area once they had landed. Southwest Airlines Flight 2492 from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Atlanta and Delta Flight 1156 from Portland, Oregon to Atlanta were then both swept by bomb squad units and K-9 teams after passengers deplaned.

Passengers from the two flights were questioned and their luggage was searched by bomb-sniffing dogs.

The two fighter jets that were scrambled from McEntire Joint National Guard Base in South Carolina returned to base after the planes landed.

Following extensive searches and screening, airport officials wrote in a tweet: “All clear for both aircraft & normal airport operations have resumed. Thank you for your patience. Safety & security are our top priorities.”

Britt Johnson, Special Agent in Charge of the Atlanta FBI Field Office told media the FBI will “absolutely be doing everything we can to identify who made the initial threats and track them down.”

Bomb threats that turned out to be false alarms were also made in recent days against Delta flights headed for Tel Aviv and for Raleigh, North Carolina.

Atlanta is a Hard Place for Orthodox Jews to Leave

Tuesday, February 5th, 2013

Atlanta, GA, is a hard place for Orthodox Jews to leave: That was the message I got from my Shabbat hosts in Atlanta.  That is even though they are dreaming of making Aliyah to Israel and even own homes/apartments there.  Everything they need for a full, fulfilling, rewarding Torah Jewish life can be conveniently found in their Atlanta neighborhood.

From their stories, even the local Christians are friendly an supportive.  This pocket of America is very anti-Obama.  They told me that Obama is costing them money in added taxes. That is as employees and business owners.  I met a number of their friends and that was the message.Jews and Christians from what I understand are to the right of the Likud’s Benjamin Netanyahu.  They insist that your ordinary American does not see why Israel should cede any land to the Arabs.  It makes no sense to them at all. This jives 100% with the Christians I’ve met over the thirty plus years I’ve lived in Shiloh and hosted and led groups of religious Christians who have toured Shiloh’s holy spots.

If the State of Israel, Prime Minister on down would just announce, inflexibly that we declare sovereignty over all of Judea, Samaria, Jordan Valley, Golan etc, no negotiations, they would back us.  Your ordinary person in the States, according to them, accepts the 1967 Six Day War victory as the legal defeat of the Arab armies, Jordan, Egypt and Syria, which had tried to destroy the State of Israel.  We never fought a country called “Palestine,” since there never was one in the entire history of the world.  The so-called “Palestinian People” is a fiction invented/created to undermine and destroy the Jewish State of Israel.

More Reporting from the ‘Real America’

Sunday, February 3rd, 2013

This is my first visit to Atlanta, GA.  It’s actually my second visit to the old south. In my first year at Stern College, Y.U. for Women, 1967, I spent Yom Kippur with a close friend’s family in Danville, VA.  The Orthodox Jewish community at the time had been dwindling to the point that on an ordinary Shabbat, young men from other cities would volunteer to spend it there to make a minyan.  There were enough locals on Yom  Kippur.  I’m pretty sure that was the first time I had eaten homemade challah.  In New York or even Connecticut you could buy it in a bakery.

Now, when I’ve shopped in N.Y. or even Phoenix, the salespeople in their spiel ask where I’m from when I decline their offers to join their stores “frequent shopper clubs.”  I say I live abroad, and they ask what country and I answer Israel and usually get sincere seeming replies, including a yearning to visit.  I haven’t gotten that here.  But I have ridden on Jimmy Carter Blvd or Street.  I guess it’s Jimmy Carter country.

I’ll be spending Shabbat with the Orthodox Jewish community here and from the looks of it, I’ll be having fun.  So far we’ve eaten out in two kosher restaurants and we haven’t sampled them all.  There seems to be lots of kosher food available and in those areas I saw lots of frum people wandering about, sort of like Kew Garden Hills, N.Y.

Please don’t ask me about what’s happening in Israel.  I haven’t a clue.  It doesn’t seem to be very newsworthy here.

Lots of Israelis live in this fantasy world thinking that the United States of America, politicians and ordinary citizens are very concerned with Israel.  Sorry, but it’s not true.  Here and there there are pockets of caring people and some of them wouldn’t mind if we were pushed into the sea, G-d forbid.  Most Americans care more about who’s going to win the Super Bowl.  That’s the truth.  Very few Americans care about the security and continued existence of Israel.  They are more concerned about finding the closest Sears Outlet for the best deal on a new washing machine.

So Israeli citizens, we must do what’s best for us and not pay and not pay attention to the U.S.A. That’s the only way we’ll get respect and be left alone.
