EU Condemns Death Sentences in Gaza for Suspected Collaborators With Israel

Wednesday, April 20th, 2016

By Jonathan Benedek/TPS

The European Union released a statement earlier today in which it condemned the military courts in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip for sentencing to death five convicts accused of collaborating with Israel.

“The EU Missions in Jerusalem and Ramallah condemn the five death sentences issued by military courts in the Gaza Strip on 18 April,” said the EU statement. “These include three new death sentences and the confirmation of two previous ones, all on the grounds of collaboration with enemy forces.”

“This brings to ten the total number of death sentences to be issued in Gaza this year,” the EU added.

Death sentences for convicted informants and collaborators with Israel are nothing new for the Hamas regime as the terror organization has executed many such individuals over the years. However, the EU focused less on opposition to the punishment of suspected collaborators with Israel and more on the use of the death penalty in general.

“As in their most recent statement on 13 April, the EU Missions in Jerusalem and Ramallah recall the EU’s firm opposition under all circumstances to the use of capital punishment,” the EU stressed in its statement.

“It considers capital punishment to be cruel and inhuman, that it fails to provide deterrence to criminal behavior, and represents an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity,” the statement continued.

The EU expressed its belief that the removal of the death penalty would help to serve as a step forward in the advancement of human rights under the Hamas terror regime in Gaza.

The EU also asked that the Hamas authorities in Gaza abide by the decision of the Palestinian Authority, which only governs over Palestinian communities in Judea and Samaria and not in Gaza, to implement a moratorium on the death penalty.

“The authorities in Gaza must refrain from carrying out any executions of prisoners and comply with the moratorium on executions put in place by the Palestinian Authority, pending abolition of the death penalty in line with the global trend,” insisted the EU.

Tortured by Nazis, Holocaust Survivors Now Abused by Arab Neighbors in Haifa

Thursday, June 11th, 2015

It has taken at least two reports to police after a number of beatings, thefts and threats to elderly Holocaust survivors at a residence in northern Israel before the suspected attackers were finally arrested.

On Thursday, the accused abusers were to appear before the Haifa Magistrate’s Court as police request an extension of remand.

“Elderly Holocaust survivors, some not mentally well, went through a series of abuses” at the hands of a family of Palestinian collaborators with Israel, according to a police report filed in Haifa on Wednesday. The family lives on the same street as the residence in which the seniors are housed, according to the court papers.

“What we heard there was simply horrendous,” said one high-ranking police officer quoted by the Hebrew-language Yediot Acharanot newspaper.

“Their credit cards were stolen, they were forced to step off the sidewalk and walk on the road, they were beaten and their property was vandalized.”

A search of the suspects’ homes turned up jewelry, cell phones, work tools and other items that were suspected of being stolen. Police seized several of the family’s vehicles.

According to the police report filed with Haifa Police by the organization director and security officer who work at the residence for Holocaust survivors, employees were not exempted from the hostilities.

The seven members of the Palestinian family also vandalized vehicles belonging to employees of the organization that runs the residence, threatening the workers and assaulting them in several cases as well. Some of the suspects are known to law enforcement officials from previous incidents.

Amnesty Accuses Hamas of Torturing and Killing Arabs Who Helped Israel

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015

Hamas executed at least 23 suspected collaborators for Israel during the Protective Edge counter-terrorist campaign last summer, Amnesty International charged late Tuesday.

The accusations are of no surprise to Israel but are particularly significant because they were made by Amnesty, which until last year almost single-mindedly and repeatedly condemned Israel for “war crimes” while almost ignoring Hamas rocket attacks on the country.

The human rights group began to focus on Hamas last year with charges that the terrorist organization was not exactly an innocent victim, but it also took care to accuse Israel of “callous indifference” by carrying out aerial bombings that allegedly killed civilians. It did not note that Hamas used them as human shields.

However, Tuesday’s condemnation does not try to “balance” the charges against Hamas with accusations against Israel.

Hamas posted videos and photos last year showing public executions of Arabs, outside a mosque, suspected of collaborating with Israel

Amnesty said Hamas named the coordinated campaign of fear “Strangling Necks.

Amnesty’s report was issued hours before Gaza terrorists attacked Israel with a missile Tuesday night. The IDF swiftly retaliated with aerial bombings of terror targets.

The report incriminating Hamas stated in part:

In the chaos of the conflict, the de facto Hamas administration granted its security forces free rein to carry out horrific abuses, including against people in its custody. These spine-chilling actions, some of which amount to war crimes, were designed to exact revenge and spread fear across the Gaza Strip.

At least two of those killed were serving prison terms at the time of their deaths.

Hamas spokesman Mushir al-Masri told The New York Times that the Amnesty charges are not totally accurate because Hamas never claimed “responsibility for the killing of collaborators during the war.” That would seem to indicate, “If you can’t prove we tortured and killed people, we are innocent.”

The report implicitly tempered previous condemnation of Israel for “callous indifference.”  It flatly stated that Hamas launched rockets and missiles from civilian areas, including schools and hospitals.

Hamas Plans More Executions to Stop Collaboration with Israel

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

Hamas is planning to put an end to collaboration with Israel by its citizens by simply killing them, perhaps by hanging them for the public to see. The policy of simply killing those who try to help Israel with information on intended terrorist attacks would end the phenomenon, according to Hamas’ thinking.

Executions are not new for Hamas, but the terrorist organization that rules Gaza now is boasting that it will return to the policy, with one leader urging public hangings.

Hamas managed to revolt the world last year by publicly executing several alleged collaborators and then dragging bodies tied to motorcycles, through the public streets.

Salah Addin Abu Sharkh, director of internal security at the Interior Ministry, said the government had “a clear goal and several means to eradicate this dangerous epidemic,” including executing convicted collaborators.

An anti-collaboration campaign, from mid-March to mid-May netted several suspects, and two men are on death row.

Hamas court official Khaled el-Batash told a Hamas media outlet that courts should be allowed carry out their own rulings by employing police to publicly hang collaborators.
