The Epidemic of Arab Terror and its Cure

Wednesday, November 4th, 2015

When everyone began trying to understand the waves of Arab violence and terror hitting Israel, all sorts of explanations were proposed.

Personally, I’m sticking with simple bloodlust, as I’ve pointed out before.

Yes, there is the Islamic and Arab cultural baggage that fuels their fervor, but it’s always been bloodlust that sends them over the edge, moving from slogans to concrete actions.

But the other question is, what ignites this Sudden Jihad Syndrome, where repeatedly, a middle-class Arab from Jerusalem or other Israeli cities, wakes up and decides to stab a Jew or run him or her over?

I’m pointing out that the terrorists are middle-class Arabs for a reason.

The Arab scholar Bassam Tawil began looking into the family lives of these terrorists. He visited their homes and discovered that they didn’t live in poverty, they weren’t uneducated people, they weren’t jobless.

In Tawil’s words, they were “leading comfortable lives, with unlimited access to education and work.” They were from normative, middle class Arab homes.

Most were educated, popular, good-looking, had jobs, and their families are stable and financially secure members of their communities.

So what drives a normal, middle-class Arab young man or woman to suddenly wake up, take a knife out of his mother’s kitchen and get in his car to go kill Jews?

Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Tipping Point” has been on my mind for a while now (I don’t have a copy in front of me, someone borrowed it and didn’t return it). Gladwell talks about “epidemics” and what makes them happen – what is the impetus that “jolts” a stable situation out of equilibrium – in our case, a low level of violence, to almost daily stabbings and vehicular attacks by a particular kind of person, who might otherwise sit next to you on the bus or light rail on the way to work, or serve you in the store or restaurant you frequent.

What triggered my memory is a story Gladwell tells in his book of a suicide epidemic that hit Micronesia, also known as the Werther effect. It is a spike and cluster of suicides in a community that follow a well-publicized suicide.

Wikipedia describe it as:

The Werther effect not only predicts an increase in suicide, but the majority of the suicides will take place in the same or a similar way as the one publicized. The more similar the person in the publicized suicide is to the people exposed to the information about it, the more likely the age group or demographic is to die by suicide. The increase generally happens only in areas where the suicide story was highly publicized. Upon learning of someone else’s suicide, many people decide that action is appropriate for them as well, especially if the publicized suicide was of someone in a similar situation as them.

There’s another similar epidemic, now called the Columbine effect, where the killers idealize the original massacre, try to duplicate it, and more so, try to improve upon it to reach it’s idealized form as they imagine it.

I can’t imagine a more fitting description for what we are facing in Israel.

An Arab runs some Jews over, gets out of the car and then tries to stab the Jews, the Arab terrorist is then shot and killed, or alternatively, an Arab takes his mother’s knife, walks around, stabs a Jew, the terrorist is then shot and killed. The story gets elaborated on, that the Jews planted the knife, or the breaks failed. The video/photo/story is then posted to Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp.

Attack. Kill. Post. Watch. Repeat.

One of the proposed solutions in communities where these suicide epidemics hit, is for the local media to stop reporting the incidents, and that helps end the epidemic. Of course, in the age of social media, that’s damn near impossible, so the situation just feeds on itself, until some other factor changes, and it peters out.

Gladwell discusses three possible areas of change: the Law of the Few, the Stickiness Factor, and the Power of Context.

The Law of the Few: These are the trend-setters that first start an idea and the social connectors who get the idea out to their wider group of friends and followers.

The Stickiness Factor: This is the slogan. A contagious message connected to the act that keeps the act in mind. It could be some minor tweak to a well-worn message that suddenly gives it impact and for some reason turns it into an earworm that won’t get out of your head.

The Power of Context: This is what you see around you. People act and react based on the physical and social environmental cues around them. Our current situation fits this formula (and the previous waves fit similar formulas).

The Arabs see cool, middle-class Arabs suddenly getting up and killing a Jew using one of two easy methods, the youth gets killed, it gets posted on the internet by key social media connectors, and then widely distributed and watched – the Law of the Few.

The Arabs link the attacks to a slogan – in this wave’s case, the Jews are changing the status quo (which every time Netanyahu says that he isn’t, but uses those words, he triggers them even more). A second message has also developed which is “the Jews planted the knife” – The Stickiness Factor.

And finally, the Arab community hears repeatedly from their imams and in their mosques, on social media and at home, how the Jews are executing innocent Arabs and planting knives near their bodies, and they must defend Al Aqsa which the Jews are destroying. The returned bodies get a hero’s funerals. Other terrorists get streets and schools named after them by the PA government, and their jailed terrorists get healthy salaries. Those are the constant environmental cues around them, telling them that Arabs must take action against the Jews, and it’s OK and even heroic to do so – the Power of Context.

These three rules defining what pushes an act over the tipping point, turning it into an epidemic, can perhaps also provide clues on how to end the epidemic.

The Law of the Few: We have four “guilty parties” in this case, the people videoing the events, the people posting the videos to the “right” groups and pages, the social media platforms and the newspapers. You can’t have newspapers not report the latest terrorist attack, but perhaps they could be less gruesome about their reporting. Similarly, the popular social media platforms and video sharing platforms could be told to block and remove the videos. But alternative social-sharing platforms will just pop-up or become popular, if the current ones start restricting usage.

One could go after the people making and posting the videos, but again, it’s a widespread phenomena.

So we may be stuck with limited ability to affect this rule, but it’s worth looking into, nonetheless.

The Stickiness Factor: The message is the message. Proving it false clearly doesn’t work, and in fact even antagonizes them more, perhaps due to the cognitive dissonance it evinces.

We may be stuck with no ability to change their message, and the best move is to not even discuss it, or try to react to it – Netanyahu should not have even talked about the status quo or the Temple Mount.

The Power of Context: The environment is something we actually can change and affect.

If no terrorist bodies are returned, they can’t hold public celebrations.

If imams are inciting hatred and publicly repeating the message then isolate and arrest them.

If the messages are being transferred through social media and video sharing platforms, then identify those audiences most likely to be affected and temporarily shut down access, ranging from WhatsApp, Facebook and YouTube, to internet and cellular access in specific neighborhoods and phones until things calm down.

When Israel put up the temporary wall in Jeruslaem and threatened to revoke residency rights from the terrorists and their families, that changed the environment, and caused those who understood what that meant for their lives to influence and control those family members more susceptible to the terror meme.

Israel disrupted the environment.

Israel non-violently forced the families to change the conversation. They still hate Jews, and they aren’t any less scared of dying, but the conversation now also says there’s too high a price to pay for heroically acting on the terror, and the rest of the family would suffer unacceptably.

A comparable price tag can be found for the Arabs in Judea and Samaria, which would similarly disrupt the conversational environment that provides positive context for the attacks.

We’re facing an epidemic of terror.

But now that we understand it, we have the tools to control it and keep it in check, if we’re prepared to use them.

Beit Shemesh Terrorists Linked to Hamas

Thursday, October 22nd, 2015

Two Arab terrorists who carried out an attack Thursday morning in Beit Shemesh appear to be linked to Gaza’s ruling Hamas terrorist organization.

The attackers wore shirts emblazoned with symbols of the Izz a-Din al-Qassam Brigades, police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld confirmed to JewishPress.com.

Izz a-Din al-Qassam Brigades is the military wing of Hamas.

Magdad Alhih and Mahmoud Ghanimat, both age 21, were residents of the village of Surif in the Hebron / Gush Etzion area.

One of the two terrorists was declared dead on arrival at Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center. The second attacker is still living and is listed in serious condition.

UNESCO Chief ‘Deplores’ Palestinian Authority’s Western Wall Proposal, Resolution Rescinded

Wednesday, October 21st, 2015

(JNi.media) The Palestinian Authority on Tuesday night rescinded their proposal to declare the Western Wall part of the great Muslim Al Aqsa mosque, Carmel Shama Hacohen, Israel’s Permanent Representative to the OECD, told Israel Radio.

UNESCO chief Irina Bokova on Tuesday expressed concern over the draft resolution in which member states Algeria, Egypt, Kuwait, Morocco, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates declare that “the Buraq Plaza (their name for the Western Wall) is an integral part of the Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al-Sharif.”

“She deplores the recent proposals under discussion by the UNESCO executive board that could be seen to alter the status of the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, and that could further incite tensions,” Bokova’s spokesperson said in a statement, adding, “The director-general appeals to the UNESCO executive board to take decisions that do not further inflame tensions on the ground and that encourage respect for the sanctity of the holy sites.”

The proposal met with irate responses from Jewish organizations, as well as from the State of Israel, whose Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely called the resolution another “shameful and deceitful attempt” to rewrite history, adding that “the Temple Mount and the Western Wall in Jerusalem are the cornerstones of Jewish history. They are historical facts no one can dispute.”

But the strongest push against the incendiary proposal came from the US State Dept., whose spokesman Edgar Vasquez told The Jerusalem Post, “The United States strongly opposes this resolution and any such use of international fora such as UNESCO to inflame tension in the region and alter the status quo at the holy sites. … The United States is in close, urgent consultation with UNESCO member states, UNESCO leadership and Israel to discuss this matter. One-sided anti-Israel resolutions have been a recurring challenge at UNESCO since 2009, and in all such circumstances, the United States has blocked consensus on such resolutions by calling for a vote and voting against the texts.”

‘Not A Single Jew Will Remain On This Land,’ Promises A Gaza Cleric [video]

Tuesday, October 20th, 2015

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a visit to IDF troops at the Gaza border on Tuesday the southern front is “under control.”

Together with Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot and top IDF brass, the prime minister said Israel is engaged in a three-front security battle.

Of these, he said, quiet at the Temple Mount is paramount, followed by security in Judea and Samaria, and “thirdly, in Gaza.”

But there’s a witch’s brew being cooked up by radical Islamist clerics who belong to the Hamas terrorist organization that rules Gaza.

Perhaps after being goaded by Da’esh (ISIS) terrorists who taunted Hamas and Fatah with not being Islamic enough and not carrying out enough attacks against Jews, Hamas uploaded another “how to stab” tutorial on Tuesday.

The “West Bank Intifada – Preparing a Knife for Stabbing” video shows the budding terrorist-in-the-making exactly how to prepare a proper weapon for optimal stabbing. This may be due to the fact that so many of the recent attacks have been carried out with could be viewed as less than professional weaponry – and so perhaps Hamas is embarrassed by the turnout.

But not to worry: Tuesday’s video demonstrates lethal stabbing methods, along with ways to sharpen one’s weapon. The video clip was caught and translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

Just one week earlier, on October 13, Muslim television host and Hamas cleric Sheikh Iyad Abu Funun promised Palestinian Arab viewers watching Al Aqsa TV that “not a single Jew” will remain in Israel.

“Let me say something clearly to the Zionists, something that should reach all those enemies, whether left-wing, right-wing, secular, religious, or extremist,” Abu Funun said, in a clip of the sermon downloaded and translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

“Regardless of their appearance or the color of their skin, they are on the land of Islam and the Muslims, on the land of the Prophet’s nocturnal journey.

“Any of our enemies living on this land must understand that they have no place on this land.

“Brother, could you bring me a copy of the Qu’ran?,” he asked someone in the studio. “I want to swear on the Qu’ran that not a single Jew will remain on this land. Not a single settler will remain on this land. Absolutely not.

“The sheikhs who preceded me swore on the Qu’ran that not a single Jew would remain on this land and that you would not win any battle.

“I too swear on the Qu’ran that by Allah the Almighty who created the skies above and all creatures, who sent us the Qu’ran and the messengers, who created Paradise and Hell, life and death, we will not leave a single Jew on our Islamic land – no child, no adult, no settler, no soldier, nobody of Eastern or Western origin.

“No Jew will remain on the land of Islam and the Muslims. This is my vow on behalf of the entire Palestinian people and of the Arab and Islamic nation in its entirety, from East to West.

“If the enemies do not understand this, they are stupid. They are stupid,” he repeated.

“They have not read the books of history. Go and read them, and learn what happened between us,” he advised.

“In the days when the Prophet Muhammad was in Medina, the Jews of Bani Qaynuqa’, of Bani Nazir, and Bani Qurayza were there. What did you do? You betrayed the Prophet once and did not learn your lesson. You betrayed him a second, third, and fourth time, and did not learn your lesson.

Arab Terrorists in Hebron Now Taking Orders from ISIS? [video]

Tuesday, October 20th, 2015

Palestinian Arabs in Hebron were handing out candies Tuesday afternoon to celebrate the murder of an Israeli Jew in a stone-throwing terror attack near Kiryat Arba.

The victim, a resident of the Jewish community situated next the Hebron, was driving near the al-Fawar junction when his car came under a hail of rocks hurled by Palestinian Arab terrorists. He was forced to exit the vehicle due to the damage sustained by the car, and then was hit by a truck driven by a Palestinian Arab.

The second driver fled the scene and drove to the village of Dahariya, a suburb of Hebron, where he turned himself in to Palestinian Authority Police. PA Police then turned the driver over to Israel Police for questioning, according to Israel Radio.

ISIS terrorists have been urging Palestinian Arabs to increase their attacks on Jews and have even offered video tutorials on how best to accomplish these goals.

In the past 72 hours, nearly a dozen such videos have been uploaded by the terror organization to the Internet. Some of them criticize Hamas as well as Fatah, claiming that both factions are too secular and that neither has the interests of Palestinian Arabs at heart.

Four videos were released on Sunday night alone, and another three were uploaded on Monday. All urged attacks on Israelis.

Some offered instructions on exactly how to murder Jews – by using vehicles, knives, firebombs hurled at homes, bombing buses, injecting air into Jews’ veins – that last, a directive aimed at the numerous Israeli Arabs employed by medical centers and HMOs in the country.

The videos also featured unmasked ISIS terrorists praising the recent terror attacks against Israelis in Jerusalem and urge other Palestinian Arabs to emulate their example.

“Strike fear into their hearts. They are the enemy of Allah,” says one terrorist. “A victory is coming to the fighters of Al Aqsa from Above … you are the ones to begin [this] but we will [join you] and continue [the fight],” says another.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also noticed local Arab terrorism slowly drifting towards an even more radical form of Islam than it has subscribed to in past years.

“What we are seeing here is a combination of the radical Islam and the Internet,” he told a meeting of the Likud party faction on Monday. “Osama Bin Laden meets Mark Zuckerberg. The incitement in the social networks is moving the murders. We are seeing this clearly,” he said.

The current wave of terror began with a completely unfounded rumor that Israel was planning to “change the status quo” at the Temple Mount, site of the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock.

Jerusalem’s holiest and most sensitive site for Jews, it is believed to be the location of the “Holy of Holies” of both ancient Jewish Holy Temples. It is also the third holiest site in the world in Islam, referred to by Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.

Under an agreement signed between Israel and Jordan, non-Muslim visitors are allowed to tour the grounds but cannot enter the mosques; Muslim worshipers are welcomed to enter the mosques to pray. Day-to-day operations at the site are carried out under the Islamic Waqf Authority, and Israeli security personnel works together with Authority staff to maintain calm at the site.

This status quo has been maintained without any change whatsoever since the signing of the peace treaty between Israel and the Kingdom of Jordan in 1994, and Israel has continued to maintain there will be no changes.

Palestinian Arabs who attempt to smuggle explosives, rocks, firebombs, firecrackers, ammunition and other weapons into the mosque in order to stockpile an arsenal at the site for use against Israelis and other visitors, however, are in effect themselves changing the status quo, Netanyahu pointed out.

The issue of the Temple Mount — where no changes whatsoever have been made since the site returned to Jewish hands — has been a convenient red herring with which to stir up Islamic sentiment in Israel and worldwide, however.

ISIS media moguls are highly skilled at “catching the wave” in mass media manipulation, not only in Israel but elsewhere, and for all ages.

Turkey Also in the Crosshairs
Turkey is also being targeted. An ISIS training camp for children was discovered in Istanbul, according to the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Daily News, which quoted the daily Vatan.

A total of 24 suspects were detained two days ago (Oct. 18) on suspicion of having links to Da’esh in Istanbul. The children, who were of Tajik and Uzbek descent, were allegedly being trained by ISIS in basement apartments in the ancient Turkish city’s Pendik and Basaksehir districts.

The suspects were reported to having used the basement apartments as terrorist training camps, according to physical and technical surveillance carried out by the Istanbul Police Department’s Counterterrorism Unit.

Netanyahu on Radical Islam: Osama Bin Laden Meets Mark Zuckerberg

Monday, October 19th, 2015

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Monday that he soon will announce measures against the radical Islamic Movement, whose northern branch leader Raed Salah has been arrested several times for inciting violence.

The Prime Minister added:

We are seeing a combination of the Internet and Islamic extremists, and the incitement on social media is fueling murder. It has been Osama Bin Laden meets Mark Zuckerberg.

Salah was convicted last week and faces a jail sentence of several months, but he vowed to continue his campaign from behind bars to “free Al Aqsa.”

The current and previous governments have turned a blind eye to the Islamic Movement, which has hypnotized of thousands of Arabs in the Galilee and Bedouin in the Negev to adopt terror “in the name of Allah.”
