Dramatic Increase in Attacks Against Israel in March

Tuesday, April 1st, 2014

Throughout March there was a drastic increase in terror attacks on various Israeli fronts.

There was an increase in terrorist attacks against Israeli targets. These attacks varied from failed attempts to smuggle long-range surface-to-surface rockets into Gaza, two explosive devices detonated against IDF soldiers on both the Lebanese and Syrian borders, a barrage of 70 rockets fired at southern Israel from Gaza, an uncovering of the largest tunnel so far from Gaza into Israel, and routine activities in the Central Command in order to prevent terrorist activities and safeguard Israeli life.

Operation “Full Disclosure” took place on March 5, when the IDF managed to prevent an attempt to smuggle an Iranian shipment of advanced weaponry intended for terrorist organizations operating in the Gaza Strip. The operation was possible due to the combination of in-depth intelligence and enhanced operational capabilities. In the successful operation, 40 rockets (type M-302), which can reach up to a range of 160 kilometers, 181 mortar shells (122 mm) and approximately 400,000 7.62 caliber rounds were found on board the Klos-C.

Increase in Instability on the Northern Border

In March, two rockets landed in northern Israel, and two concealed explosive devices were detonated against IDF soldiers along the Israeli border with Lebanon (March 14) and Syria (March 18). During the latter, four soldiers were injured. A similar incident was prevented on March 5, when soldiers identified three Hezbollah-affiliated terrorists attempting to conceal an explosive device in the northern Golan Heights. The IDF responded immediately and fired towards the suspects.

At the end of the month (March 28), the IDF opened fire towards two armed suspects who infiltrated into Israel in the central Golan Heights. Following this escalation, the IDF is reviewing the rules of engagement along the border.

Gaza: Defending Israel From Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas

Over the course of the month, approximately 123 rockets were launched from Gaza at Israel, out of which 77 rockets hit southern Israel. These figures include the massive rocket attack that took place between March 12-March 14, when a barrage of 70 rockets hit southern Israel, and five additional rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system. This was the most severe rocket attack since operation “Pillar of Defense.”

At the end of the month (March 21), the IDF exposed the opening of a tunnel built by Gaza terrorists near Israeli civilian communities. The tunnel was dug 1,200 meters into Israel. This is the fourth tunnel exposed in the last 18 months, indicating a clear Hamas strategy to create points of infiltration from Gaza into Israel.

Over the past month, two explosive devices were uncovered and detonated in the southern Gaza Strip adjacent to the fence.

The IDF prevented rocket attacks on Israeli civilians by precision-targeting terror squads in Gaza responsible for launching attacks at southern Israel. IAF aircraft targeted a terrorist squad preparing to launch rockets (March 3) and a terrorist squad affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, immediately after they fired a mortar shell at IDF soldiers (March 11).

Is Preemptive Action Permissible Under Torah Law?

Wednesday, March 26th, 2014

Recent events in Israel have encouraged discussion on preemptive strikes according to Torah law.

For example, after some reprieve, the launching of rockets from the Gaza Strip has resumed. Last week southern Israel experienced a barrage of more than 90 rockets within 24 hours. In response, the IDF attacked a number of terror targets.

“The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli citizens and IDF soldiers, and will continue to act decisively and strongly against anyone who carries out terror activities against the State of Israel,” according to an IDF statement.

“The IDF is prepared to defend the citizens of Israel,” the statement continued. “The IDF will continue to take determined action against any party that uses terrorism against the State of Israel.”

Clearly, the IDF is threatening major offensives, both as a response to the current rocket fire and to discourage future attacks.

In yet another exciting recent news story, we see unexpected, definitive preemptive action in what was dubbed Operation Full Exposure  on March 5. As readers may recall, IDF naval commandos intercepted an Iranian ship loaded with lethal weapons intended for use against Israeli civilians.

The loot included: 40 M-302 rockets, with a range of 90 to 160 km, 181 mortar shells, 400,000 bullets, and much more.

A Preemptive Strike is Often Necessary for Survival

So what does the Torah have to say about a preemptive strike?

A Jew should always prefer peace over war; nevertheless, we are required to fight for justice and to defend ourselves against any threats.

For example, when Abraham’s nephew Lot was captured and taken hostage, Abraham waged a war to win his release (Genesis 14).

So, too, in an example relating to the recent Purim celebrations, the Torah commands us to destroy the nation of Amalek, which is intrinsically committed to the destruction of the Jewish People; they were the first to attack the vulnerable Hebrew nation after they left Egypt. (Exodus 17).

There are many more examples. Indeed, as seen throughout Scripture, the Jewish People regularly faced wars, some of which necessitated a preemptive strike.

The Talmud teaches: “If someone comes to kill you – kill him first!” (Sanhedrin 72a). preemptive strike

This ruling is summarized in the Code of Jewish law, which says: “If one sees that someone is pursuing him with the intention to kill him, he is permitted to defend himself and kill the one who is pursuing him.” (Choshen Mishpat 125:1).

Considering that Hamas, Iran, and Hezbollah continue to attack Israel ruthlessly, making every effort to kidnap our soldiers and terrorize innocent civilians, it is clear from the Torah, Talmud, and Jewish law that it is not only permissible, but also obligatory, to launch a preemptive strike.

We saw how true this was with during the Six Day War in 1967, when Israel launched the preemptive strike, as well as with the unexpected raid on Entebbe in 1976 to free Israeli hostages.

Indeed, Israel may not have become as secure and powerful as it is today if not for the many daring and heroic preemptive strikes in the course of its short history.

PM Thanks Panama for Role in Capturing Iranian Smuggling Ship

Friday, March 21st, 2014

PM Netanyahu sent a personal thank you to Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli for Panama’s role in the interception of the Iranian weapons smuggling ship, the Klos C, according to a report in the Jerusalem Post.

The cargo ship, carrying massive amounts of weapons being smuggled from Iran to Gaza, was sailing under the Panamanian flag, and Israel received authorization from Panama to board the vessel.

“Martinelli is a true friend of Israel and the Jewish people,” Netanyahu’s spokesman Mark Regev said, according to the Jerusalem Post report.

Fatah Official: Allah Will Gather Israelis So We Can Kill Them

Thursday, March 13th, 2014

During an interview on the official Palestinian Arab television station on March 12, 2014, the hostess asked her guest, Abbas Zaki, about recent efforts undertaken by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. The clip and translation is from Palestinian Media Watch.

Zaki is the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s representative to Lebanon and a member of the Fatah central committee. Fatah, as in the party of the acting leader of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas.

Zaki was a colleague and admirer of Yassir Arafat’s, but today he dresses in a dark three piece suit, with his hair perfectly coiffed, and a maroon tie.

The news hostess wanted to know if Zaki believed that the reason Israel struck out and eliminated three members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad earlier this week, was that Netanyahu was disappointed in the media and global response to something Israel did last week.

She was suggesting that Netanyahu was pouting because there wasn’t a mass condemnation either in the media or by national and international leaders, in response to Israel’s discovery and disabling of the merchant ship, the Klos C, containing a weapons shipment from Iran and intended for Gaza, for use against Israel.

And in his disappointment at failing to raise support for Israel’s cause, Netanyahu so “he resorted to the Israeli occupation’s traditional method – killing Palestinians, in order to provoke a Palestinian reaction.”

And Zaki, a close friend and colleague of Mahmoud Abbas, jumped right in on cue.

“Netanyahu tried to provoke an uproar” over Iran, both with his “red line” speech and again with the illegal weapons interdiction, but he failed, according to Zaki.

The Israelis “have no beliefs, they have no principles,” Zaki said. “They are an advanced instrument of evil.”

Next, Zaki said that the Israelis always bring up the Holocaust, “fine,” what does that have to do with us?

“Therefore, I believe, Allah will gather them so we can kill them.” Then Zaki leans back in his chair, and gestures with his hands, palms facing forward: “I am informing the murderer of his death.”

Behind the Scenes Video: IDF Mission to Stop Iranian Terror Ship

Thursday, March 6th, 2014

Israel’s Defense Intelligence units have been piecing together, for many months, the puzzle regarding the arms smuggling,” Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi said in a press briefing Thursday morning. His remarks referred to an IDF operation on Wednesday, which intercepted an Iranian weapons shipment on its way to terrorists in the Gaza Strip.

Maj. Gen. Kochavi emphasized that the shipment without doubt originated in Iran. “We have good, solid, incriminating evidence that Iran planned, managed and executed this arms smuggling,” he said. The Quds Force, a special unit of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, was the prime force behind the arms shipment, he noted.

The smuggling attempt was the latest in a long line of Iran’s attempts to ship weapons to terror groups in the region. “This is yet another example of the ongoing process, the ongoing effort of the Iranians to undermine the stability of the Middle East,” Maj. Gen. Kochavi said. Iran’s goal is ”to undermine regimes and to support all forms of terror organizations in Lebanon, in Syria, in Iraq, in Bahrain, in Yemen, in Libya and in the Gaza Strip, which was the destination of these rockets.”

UN Resolution 1747 forbids Iran from engaging in arms smuggling, he said. “Again and again, Iran violated the decision of the UN Security Council that prohibits it from selling and transferring weaponry.”
